UW-Oshkosh’s Schwamb and UW-Whitewater’s Rogers Named Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athletes

WIACMadison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Terri Schwamb and UW-Whitewater’s Jennifer Rogers have been named 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Co-Scholar-Athletes.

Schwamb, a senior from Little Chute, Wis., boasts a 3.97 grade point average and is majoring in math education with a minor in Spanish.  She was named to the 2007 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team and the NCAA Division III Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.  Schwamb has been recognized on UW-Oshkosh’s Dean’s List nine semesters and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.

She is a two-time WIAC champion in the hammer throw and holds the league meet record in the event.  Schwamb won the national title in the hammer throw a year ago and claimed All-America status in the competition in 2005 with a fifth-place finish.

Schwamb is a member of the Wisconsin Educators Association the Wisconsin Math Council and has served as a tutor for the UW-Oshkosh Math Department.

A senior from Fort Atkinson, Wis., Rogers possesses a 3.89 grade point average and is majoring in finance.  She received her undergraduate degree in December, 2007 and is currently enrolled as a graduate student in the school of curriculum and instruction.  Rogers is also serving as a financial representative intern with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.

She won the conference title in the 10,000-meter run at the 2007 championship and placed third in the event in 2006 and second in 2005.  Rogers was named her team’s Most Valuable Player in 2007 and also claimed UW-Whitewater’s Freshman of the Year and Sophomore of the Year accolades.

She is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, National Scholars Honor Society, Institute of Management Accountants, Finance Association and Beta Gamma Sigma.   Rogers has been involved with J-Hawk Triathlon, the UW-Whitewater Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Campus Community Clean-Up.

Also nominated for this year’s scholar-athlete award were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Molly Warner (Sr., Mosinee, Wis.), UW-La Crosse’s AnnMarie Glejf (Sr., Cudahy, Wis.), Krista Kopetsky (Sr., Appleton, Wis./East), Stephanie Lasko (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) and Katie Steingraeber (Sr., La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas), UW-Oshkosh’s Jessie Scheer (Sr., De Pere, Wis.) and Vanessa Virbitsky (Sr., Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin), UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy (Sr., Two Rivers, Wis.), Lindsey Vick (Sr., Cottage Grove, Wis./Abundant Life) and Ashleigh Waltz (Sr., Fennimore, Wis.), UW-River Falls’ Krista Hasselquist (Sr., Osceola, Wis.), UW-Stevens Point’s Hannah Dieringer (Sr., Spencer, Wis.), UW-Superior’s Sheri Niemeyer (Sr., Inwood, Iowa) and UW-Whitewater’s Ashley Pick (Sr., Monroe, Wis.).

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman and sponsored by Hewlett-Packard.  Kruckman served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98.  Prior to this appointment, she functioned as Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from October, 1984 - September, 1996.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
