Eagles Win Second Straight Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Crown
Eau Claire, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won its second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s outdoor track and field crown at UW-Eau Claire’s Simpson Field on May 2-3.
The Eagles won the 24th conference championship in program history with 192 points to surpass the second-place total of 158.50 points by UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh finished third with 140.5 points, followed by UW-River Falls in fourth with 118, UW-Stevens Point in fifth with 77, UW-Stout in sixth with 51, UW-Platteville in seventh with 50, UW-Whitewater in eighth with 46 and UW-Superior in ninth with 24.
UW-La Crosse won three individual titles and two relay crowns during the two-day competition. Caitlin Schetter claimed the long jump with a leap of 19-2 ½, while Abby Lein secured the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.13 and AnnMarie Glejf totaled 4,225 points enroute to winning the heptathlon.
The Eagles captured the 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay events with times of 47.92 and 3:54.35, respectively.
UW-River Falls secured five individuals titles, including two by Becca Jordahl who won the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs with times of 17:01.58 and 36:53.43, respectively. She was named the Track Performer of the Meet.
Krista Hasselquist placed first in the discus with a throw of 154-6, while Vicki Cooper claimed the shot put with a heave of 44-11 3/4 and Becky Ponick captured the javelin with a distance of 113-1. Cooper was named the Field Performer of the Meet.
UW-Stout had three individual champions led by Ashlea Peter who won the triple jump for the second straight year with a leap of 39-0 1/4. Sam Mayer earned the high jump with a height of 5-3 1/4 and Pam Sellberg claimed the pole vault with a height of 12-0 1/2.
UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy secured the 800-meter and 1,500-meter run for the fourth consecutive season with times of 2:12.86 and 4:38.25, respectively. The Pioneers claimed the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:06.06.
UW-Eau Claire’s Liz Kooistra won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.11, while teammate, Liz Faller secured the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.59.
UW-Stevens Point’s Elizabeth Caine won the 100-meter dash for the second straight year with a time of 12.24, while UW-Oshkosh’s Terri Schwamb became a repeat winner in the hammer throw with a fling of 191-5.
UW-Whitewater’s Brooke Bell claimed the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.12.
