UW-Stevens Point’s Maus and UW-Whitewater’s Nelson Named Women’s Volleyball Co-Scholar-Athletes
Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Shelly Maus and UW-Whitewater’s Rebekah Nelson have been named 2007 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women’s Volleyball Co-Scholar-Athletes.
Maus, a senior from Green Bay, Wis. (Southwest H.S.), carries a 3.51 grade point average and is majoring in business administration with a minor in mathematics. She has been recognized on UW-Stevens Point’s Dean’s List and Honor Roll and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.
A two-time All-WIAC first team and honorable mention selection, Maus received All-America honorable mention and All-Midwest Region first team honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) a year ago. The two-year team captain holds the school record with 1,715 career kills.
A senior from Delavan, Wis. (Williams Bay H.S.), Nelson is majoring in physical education with a minor in health/adapted physical education and maintains a 3.75 grade point average. She is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and has been recognized on UW-Whitewater’s Dean’s List and Honor Roll numerous semesters. Nelson is a three-year recipient of her school’s W-Club Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award.
A two-time team captain, Nelson earned All-WIAC honorable mention honors this season after claiming first team status a year ago. She was an AVCA All-America third team and All-Midwest Region first team choice in 2006. Earlier this season, Nelson became the 12th individual in program history to surpass 1,000 career kills.
Also nominated for this year’s scholar-athlete award were: UW-Eau Claire’s Heather Harnell (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Nikki Peterson (Sr., North St. Paul, Minn./North), UW-La Crosse’s Katelyn Carlson (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo) and Kaci O’Connell (Sr., Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell Central), UW-Oshkosh’s Rebecca Masephol (Sr., Pittsville, Wis./Auburndale) and Leah Rosenbaum (Sr., Wrightstown, Wis.), UW-Platteville’s Lynn Schreiner (Sr., Athens, Wis.), UW-River Falls’ Courtney Schroeder (Sr., Byron, Minn.), UW-Stout’s Linda Meyer (Sr., Cedarburg, Wis./Grafton) and UW-Whitewater’s Kate Lazotte (Sr., Stoughton, Wis.) and Abby Schultz (Sr., Appleton, Wis./Kimberly).
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman and sponsored by Hewlett-Packard. Kruckman served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98. Prior to this appointment, she functioned as Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from October, 1984 - September, 1996.
In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
