UW-Whitewater’s Farrar Earns Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete Award
Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Jessica Farrar has been named the 2007 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete.
Farrar, a senior from Rock Island, Ill., is majoring in sociology with a minor in environmental studies and boasts a 3.90 grade point average. She was named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team last year and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Farrar has been recognized on her institution’s Dean’s List and received the W-Club Student-Athlete Achievement Award.
A team captain the last two years, she won the No. 2 doubles crown at this year’s league championship and placed third at No. 2 singles. Farrar was also named to the inaugural WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team. In 2005, she won the No. 2 singles title at the conference meet. Farrar has claimed her team’s MVP and the Ron Wangerin Coaches Award.
She is a member of the Alpha Kappa Delta and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies. In 2005, she assisted with Habitat for Humanity and has served with the College Democrats and an alumni mentor program.
Farrar is the fifth individual in program history to win the conference scholar-athlete award, joining Debora Fleischman (1984), Stephanie Froh (1990), Mary Steimle (2003) and Kristin Chamberlain (2004).
Additional nominees for this year’s scholar-athlete award included: UW-Eau Claire’s Kristie Carlson and Sarah Riordan, UW-Stout’s Michelle Hohl and UW-Whitewater’s Tiffany Dawson.
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman and sponsored by Hewlett-Packard. Kruckman served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98. Prior to this appointment, she functioned as Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from October, 1984 - September, 1996.
In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
