UW-La Crosse Captures Women's Tennis Championship

Madison, Wis.--The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's tennis team used a steady performance at the two-day league tournament to claim the 2003 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship by the narrowest of margins over defending champion UW-Eau Claire. The league crown by the Eagles is their first since 1992 and snapped the Blugolds' 10-year conference championship winning streak.

UW-La Crosse claimed the No. 4 and No. 5 singles crowns during the second day of competition after capturing the No. 2 doubles title during the first day of the event. Colleen O'Rourke captured the No. 4 title, while Stephanie Kill became a two-time league champion and won the No. 5 crown. O'Rourke teamed with Louie Dubinski to win the No. 2 doubles title. The Eagles also posted second-place finishes at No. 1 singles and No.1 doubles.

UW-River Falls' Lee Lueck was voted the Coach of the Year by the league coaches, while UW-Whitewater's Mary Steimle earned the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
