WIAC & Wis. High School Sports Networks Debut On Charter
Madison, Wis.--Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHTR) announced today the debut of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Channel and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Channel on Charter Communications’ popular Video On Demand (VOD) service.
Charter Digital Cable® customers will now be able to access approximately nine Wisconsin high school and UW-state system athletic events each week, using Charter’s convenient “Video On-Demand” technology. Video On-Demand is a digital cable feature customers use through their Charter digital receiver to easily access a specific event or program at their leisure, any time and as often as desired.
The WIAA and WIAC events featured each week on VOD will be carefully selected to target the best match-ups in Charter’s service areas. A new slate of videotaped events from the previous week’s event schedule will be offered weekly on the service. Sports events will be available on Charter’s VOD approximately 72-hours after they are played each week.
“We are pleased to make this new local programming available free to our digital customers,” commented Lisa Washa, Vice-President & General Manager for Charter operations in Wisconsin. “Our customers love high school sports, and combining that with the UW-state system schools makes this a perfect fit for our Video On-Demand service,” Washa added. “We also try to tailor our line-ups as much for our local viewers as possible, and there is nothing of more local interest than our high schools and state universities.”
Both the WIAA and WIAC Channels will feature a wide variety of athletic events, including football, basketball, swimming, wrestling, volleyball and even track. Both men’s and women’s sports will be included. High school events from all over Charter’s Wisconsin service areas will be featured on the WIAA Channel. “We are excited to have WIAA high school sports among the programming options offered to Charter digital customers,” commented Todd Clark, WIAA’s Director of Communications. “The popularity of high school sports and how they bond schools with their communities, as well as showcasing the achievements of student-athletes in an educationally-based environment makes this relationship mutually attractive.”
The WIAC Channel will feature athletic events from the premier Division III conference in the country. “Over 80-percent of the athletes that compete in the WIAC are from Wisconsin high schools,” stated WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner. "Charter's decision to provide its digital customers with free access to WIAC and WIAA Channels speaks volumes about Charter's commitment to Wisconsin sports at all levels,” Karner continued. “This agreement provides our students and fans, as well as the over 300,000 WIAC alumni currently residing in Wisconsin, the ability to view countless WIAC athletic events involving teams from the premier Division III conference in the country and all at no additional cost to the customer. The WIAC couldn't be more pleased to be partnering with Charter on this groundbreaking development--a first of its kind in the history of Division III athletics."
"By offering this local coverage, Charter is definitely making a statement that it is an organization that is responding to the requests of its customers, to provide more local and regional programming,” commented Tim Eichorst, President of When We Were Young (WWWY) Productions, a Madison-based TV production company that holds rights to WIAA and WIAC events. WWWY is the largest individual producer of high school sports content in the country and will be producing all the events seen on the WIAA and WIAC Channels aired on Charter VOD.
Charter DigitalCable customers can get free access to these new offerings by going to channel 999 and clicking the remote to “iWantMore” then to “Local.” Once at “Local,” customers will see drop down displays for either WIAA Channel or WIAC Channel.
