Blugolds Win NCAA Softball Championship
Salem, Va.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the NCAA Division III Softball Championship with a dramatic 4-3 nine-inning victory over conference rival UW-Whitewater May 19 in the first-ever meeting between two league opponents for the national title.
The national championship for the Blugolds is the first in program history and the second for a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference program. UW-Stevens Point claimed the national crown in 1998.
The matchup between the Blugolds and Warhawks represented the third time in WIAC history two schools have met for the national championship - in any sport. The previous national title meetings were in men’s ice hockey with UW-Stevens Point beating UW-River Falls in 1993 and the UW-River Falls upending UW-Superior in 1994.
UW-Whitewater advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 victory over Louisiana College earlier in the day.
UW-Eau Claire finished the 2008 campaign with a 36-11 record, while UW-Whitewater tallied a 39-11 mark.
