Wheaton, Ill.--Defending national champion Wheaton College (Ill.) flexed its muscle with a 4-0 victory over UW-Stevens Point in the sectional semifinals of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship on Nov. 16.
Wheaton extended its winning streak to 42 matches, the second-longest streak in NCAA Division III history.
Wheaton scored in the 26th minute on a Brittany Burgh goal. Then eight minutes later Libby Passiales scored on a cross to make the score 2-0. Then a minute into the second half, Sarah Richardson scored to extend the Thunder’s lead to 3-0. Wheaton added one more goal in the 65th minute to make the final score 4-0.
UW-Stevens Point finished the season with a 16-5-2 record and participated in NCAA tournament action for the 12th time in program history.
This marked the third consecutive year the Thunder have ended the season of a team from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the NCAA tournament. UW-Eau Claire was a victim the previous two years, falling in the sectional semifinals a season ago and the second round in 2005.
