Five to be Inducted
into UW-Platteville Hall of Fame
Platteville,
Wis.--The University of Wisconsin-Platteville will induct five people
into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Sept. 23. Candidates for induction
into the Athletic Hall of Fame are selected based on outstanding performance
in intercollegiate athletics while a student at UWP, outstanding coaching
performance for at least 15 years or outstanding contributions to UWP
intercollegiate athletics.
This year's inductees are Robert
Jeter III, Douglas Marnocha, Mark Rae, David Shumway and Christopher Zwettler.
They will be honored during a morning ceremony and introduced during the
Pioneer football game against Augustana, Ill. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
Jeter played basketball for UWP
from 1987-91. In 1991, the Pioneers, with Jeter as captain, won the school's
first National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III title.
From 1994-98, he served as assistant coach under Bo Ryan while working
on a master's degree at UWP. After coaching for UW-Marquette from 1999-2001,
Jeter coached the Badgers until 2005, again under Ryan. In 2005, Jeter
became head coach for UW-Milwaukee and led the Panthers to the Horizon
League championship and a return to the Division I tournament.
Marnocha was selected to the offensive
all-conference team in 1959 and 1960 and became the first two-time captain
in UWP history in 1961 and 1962. From 1962-66, he coached football and
wrestling at Beloit Memorial High School, leading the football team to
three Big 8 Championships. After that, Marnocha coached the same two sports
at West Allis Nathan Hale High School and moved on to become principal
and athletic director for the school.
Rae participated in track and field
and football at UWP from 1984-89. He made Pioneer history in 1985 by becoming
one of three to ever earn football Academic All-American First Team honors.
In the same year, he set the school record for best punting average. In
1987, he made Pioneer history again when won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (WIAC) Scholar-Athlete award.
From 1987-91, Shumway played football
for three years and served as assistant coach of the running backs during
his last year at UWP. In 1988, 1989 and 1990, he earned First Team All-WSUC
(Wisconsin State University Conference) running back awards and led the
Pioneers to a 20-9-1 record during those three years. In 1988, Shumway
received the All-American Football award from the National Strength and
Conditioning Association. Named team co-MVP in 1989 and MVP in 1990, he
holds five records at UWP.
Zwettler played basketball and
golf at UWP. For basketball, he remains on the top ten assists list, holds
the single-game record for assists and occupies one of the top ten spots
on the UWP all-time consecutive games played list. Since his college days,
he has acquired 26 years of head coaching experience. With eight WISAA
state tournament appearances, three WISAA regional titles, two Badger
Conference titles, and one WIAA sectional title, Zwettler has earned Coach
of the Year status from the city of Madison three times, from the Badger
Conference three times and from the Associated Press once.
