State of Wisconsin Tops Country in NCAA National Championships

Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic ConferenceMadison, Wis.--The state of Wisconsin secured nine NCAA national championships during the 2005-06 academic year, representing the most NCAA titles (Division I, II and III) of any state in the country. Institutions from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) paved the way to the state total, contributing six NCAA Division III titles.

The six WIAC crowns were captured in women's volleyball (UW-Whitewater), men's cross country (UW-La Crosse), men's indoor track and field (UW-La Crosse), women's indoor track and field (UW-Oshkosh), men's outdoor track and field (UW-La Crosse) and women's outdoor track and field (UW-Oshkosh).

UW-La Crosse also won a national championship in women's gymnastics, which is awarded by the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA).

UW-Madison claimed NCAA Division I national championships in men's cross country, men's ice hockey and women's ice hockey.

The state of California finished second with seven national championships, while the state of Georgia claimed five.
