RELEASED: Thursday, June 22, 2006 Conference Places Five Institutions in Top 33 of Directors' Cup Standings
UW-La Crosse led the WIAC contingent, finishing 14th with 479, UW-Stevens Point placed 22nd with 431 points, UW-Eau Claire ended 27th with 402.875 points, UW-Whitewater finished 29th with 387 points and UW-Oshkosh placed 33rd with 328 points. UW-Platteville registered a top 100 finish after tying for 86th with 178.5 points. The conference claimed seven national titles during the 2005-06 campaign as UW-La Crosse won championships in men's cross country, men's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field and women's gymnastics. The gymnastics crown was awarded by the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association. UW-Oshkosh secured national prizes in women's indoor and outdoor track and field, while UW-Whitewater captured the women's volleyball crown. Williams College (Mass.) won its eighth straight Directors' Cup title, and 10th in the last 11 years, with 920.50 points, 130.25 points ahead of runner-up College of New Jersey. Middlebury College (Vt.) finished third with 758 points, followed by Emory University (Ga.) in fourth with 751.50 points and State University of New York College at Cortland in fifth with 654 points. The 2005-06 U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup winners were announced at NACDA's 41st Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the four winning institutions - one in each of the NCAA Divisions (I, II and III), and the NAIA - were awarded with their U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cups. Developed as a joint effort between USA Today and NACDA, the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup program is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the institution in each of the four categories with the best overall athletics program.
