Four Schools Finish in Top 28 of Directors' Cup Standings
Madison, Wis.--Four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) institutions have finished in the top 28 of the 2004-05 United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup NCAA Division III final standings. The standings recognize the top overall collegiate athletics programs in the country.
UW-Stevens Point placed fifth with 646.75 points, while UW-La Crosse finished seventh with 600.50 points, UW-Whitewater placed 23rd with 360.25 points and UW-Eau Claire finished 28th with 332.25 points.
Additional conference schools finishing in the top 100 included: UW-Oshkosh in 38th with 297 points, UW-Stout in 64th with 217.50 points and UW-Platteville in 84th with 179 points.
Williams (Mass.) won its seventh straight United Sports Academy Directors' Cup title with 1068.25 points. Middlebury (Vt.) finished second with 900 points, Washington (Mo.) third with 675.75 points, Trinity (Texas) fourth with 672 points and UW-Stevens Point fifth with 646.75 points.
This marks the sixth straight year that the WIAC has had at least two institutions finish in the top 10 of the national standings. Additionally, UW-La Crosse and UW-Stevens Point each matched the best finish in school history, which was accomplished last season.
UW-Stevens Point claimed the national title in men's basketball during the 2004-05 season, while finishing fifth in women's hockey, sixth in women's cross country, eighth in women's indoor track and field, ninth in baseball and 10th in wrestling.
UW-La Crosse secured the national championship in men's indoor track and field, while placing third in men's cross country, fourth in wrestling, fifth in women's volleyball, ninth in football and 10th in women's cross country.
The United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program sponsor. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women's and nine men's.
