Day One Recap

Pointers Maintain Advantage at Men's Swimming and Diving Championship

Oshkosh, Wis.--After only holding only a 33-point lead over UW-La Crosse after the first day of competition, UW-Stevens Point won four of seven events on Friday (Feb. 22) to increase its advantage to 79 points at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championship in UW-Oshkosh's Albee Hall.

Eight-time defending champion UW-Stevens Point scored 634 points after day two of the three-day meet. UW-La Crosse ranks second with 555 points, UW-Eau Claire third with 442, UW-Whitewater fourth with 326, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 179 and UW-River Falls sixth with 124.

Chase Gross was a part of three championships. Chase won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 52.96 and was a member of the Pointers winning 200-yard medley relay that won in a time of 1:34.01 and the victorious 800-yard freestyle relay that touched the wall in 6:56.96.

Joining Chase in the 200-yard medley relay were Willie Clapp, Ben Schreiber and Rob Donisch and in the 800-yard freestyle relay were Steve Lynam, Daniel Lynam and Vaughn Forsythe.

Steve Lynam also won the 200-yard freestyle for the Pointers in a time of 1:45.02.

UW-La Crosse saw Anthony Schmidt win his fourth consecutive WIAC title in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:10.82. He is the second person in WIAC history to win the event four times.

Karl Richters won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 58.23 to give the Eagles their second individual title on the day.

UW-Eau Claire's Bryan Dykstra won his second straight title in the one-meter diving event by totaling 489.85 points.
