Five Named To Men's Academic All-District At-Large Team

Madison, Wis.--Five Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)
student-athletes have been named to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-District Five
College Division Men's At-Large Team. UW-River Falls' Rob Novak and UW-Stout's
Lewis Kellin were named to the first team, while UW-La Crosse's Troy Fabry and
Jason Lulloff and UW-Stevens Point's Matt Sievers were second team selections.
Novak, a senior ice hockey player from Hayward, Wis., is majoring in elementary
education with a minor in health and coaching and carries a 3.91 grade point
average. He is a three-time selection on the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association
(NCHA) All-Academic Team and was named the WIAC men's ice hockey co-scholar-athlete
earlier this year. Novak helped the Falcons to a share of the WIAC championship
in 2004 and received honorable mention to the all-league squad in 2002, while
claiming All-NCHA honorable mention status in 2003.
Kellin, a senior ice hockey player from Cohasset, Minn. (Grand Rapids H.S.),
maintains a 3.92 grade point average, while majoring in business with a minor
in applied math. He is a two-time member of the NCHA All-Academic Team and shared
the WIAC men's ice hockey scholar-athlete award with UW-River Falls' Rob Novak.
Kellin is a two-time All-WIAC honorable mention selection.
Fabry, a senior wrestler from Ashwaubenon, Wis., is majoring in physical education
with a minor in adaptive physical education and carries a 3.34 grade point average.
He has been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic
Team for three consecutive years and received the WIAC wrestling scholar-athlete
award this season. Fabry is two-time All-American and two-time conference champion
at 149 pounds.
Lulloff, a sophomore wrestler from Kiel, Wis., is majoring in exercise and sports
science-teaching and carries a 3.74 grade point average. He was named to the
NWCA All-Academic Team this year and secured All-America honors with a fourth-place
finish at 184 pounds after finishing third in the 174-pound bracket a season
ago. Lulloff claimed the conference title at 184 pounds in 2004 after finishing
second at 174 pounds in 2003.
Sievers, a senior swimmer from Duluth, Minn. (Proctor H.S.), is majoring in
biology and minoring in chemistry and psychology. He maintains a 3.58 grade
point average and was named the conference's men's swimming and diving scholar-athlete
earlier this season. Sievers helped the Pointers to their fifth straight WIAC
title this season by winning the 50-yard freestyle and participating on the
first-place 200-yard freestyle relay team. He also earned All-America honors
in two events this year, as well as honorable mention recognition in three events.
The academic all-district at-large team is comprised of all NCAA Division II,
Division III and NAIA student-athletes from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and
Minnesota and is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA). It includes the sports of golf, ice hockey, swimming and
diving, tennis and wrestling.
Both Kellin and Novak are now eligible for the Academic All-America squad, which
will be announced in mid-June.

University of Wisconsin-River Falls men's and women's swimming and diving head
coach Bill Henderson has been named an assistant swim coach with the US Paralympic
team that will compete in Athens in September.
The team will compete in Athens from Sept. 17-28.
Henderson finished his second year as head coach of the men's and womens
swimming & diving team at UW-RF in 2003-04.
Henderson is originally from Sacramento, Calif., where he earned age group,
high school and junior college All-American honors in swimming. He earned his
BA in journalism and MS in physical education at California State University
at Sacramento where he also was captain of the swimming & diving team.
Hendersons coaching experience covers over 25 years at every level from
summer recreation to NCAA Div. I. He has 12 years of head coaching experience
at the USS club level for the Sierra Marlins Swim Team and the South Coast Aquatic
Team. His club swimmers garnered dozens of national top 16 finishes, over 30
high school All-American mentions and qualified for junior and senior national
competition.
He has four years experience as a head coach at the California community college
level. As head coach at Foothill College his swimmers earned 20 All-American
mentions in three seasons and the womens team won the conference championship
in 2000, their first in over nine years. Henderson also has over 13 years of
junior college water polo coaching experience.
Hendersons family lives in California. His sister, Donna, is an artist
and his brother, Rick, is the assistant mens and womens swimming
coach at UC-Davis.
He teaches in the UW-RF Health & Human Performance department.

St.
Peters, Mo.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point placed 13th out of 53
teams at the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships held
at the St. Peters Rec-Plex on March 18-20. The championship event was hosted
by Principia College (Ill.).
The Pointers totaled 87 team points for the school's best finish since 2001
when they placed sixth. UW-Oshkosh finished 18th with 47 points and UW-La Crosse
tied for 23rd with 31 points. UW-Oshkosh's finish is the best since 1996 when
they placed 17th.
Kenyon (Ohio) won its 25th straight national title with 678.50 team points.
Emory (Ga.) finished second with 446 points, followed by Carnegie Mellon (Pa.)
with 307 points, Denison (Ohio) with 246 points and Johns Hopkins (Md.) with
229.50 points.
UW-Stevens Point was led in the individual events by Alex Anderson, who registered
three top-16 finishes during the three-day meet. Anderson finished seventh in
the 200-yard breaststroke, 12th in the 100-yard freestyle and 15th in the 50-yard
freestyle with times of 2:04.81, 57.74 and 21.46, respectively.
Chad Pettis finished 10th in the one-meter diving with a score of 352.65 and
Matt Sievers finished 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.20.
The Pointers' Aaron Marshall, Garth Newport, Anderson and Sievers teamed to
place in four relay events during the national competition. They finished sixth
in the 200-yard freestyle relay, eighth in the 200-yard medley relay, 12th in
the 400-yard medley relay and 14th in the 400-yard freestyle relay with times
of 1:24.47, 1:34.05, 3:28.60 and 3:08.83, respectively.
UW-Oshkosh's Yusuke Iimori compiled a pair of top six finishes. He finished
fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.51 and sixth in the 200-yard
breaststroke with a time of 2:03.30.
The Titans' Chris Hansman finished fourth in the three-meter diving competition
with 408.40 points and finished 13th in the one-meter event with 349.80 points.
UW-La Crosse's Dave Dettmann finished eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke with
a time of 57.68. The Eagles also had a pair of relay team place in the meet.
The 400-yard medley relay team of Paul Noffke, Shane Ryan, Trevor Rowlands and
Dettmann finished 11th with a time of 3:27.10, while the 200-yard medley relay
quartet of Matthew Spurr, Ryan, Dettmann and Rowlands finished 13th with a time
of 1:34.54.
The top eight finishers in each event at the national championship earned All-America
honors, while places 9-16 claimed honorable mention All-America status.

UW-La Crosse's Noffke and UW-Stevens Point's Sievers Share Men's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete Award

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Paul Noffke and UW-Stevens
Point's Matthew Sievers have been named the 2004 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Men's Swimming and Diving Co-Scholar-Athletes,
it was announced recently by WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner.
Noffke, a senior from Neenah, Wis., is double-majoring in physics and math and
carries a 3.50 grade point average. He has been named to UW-La Crosse's Dean's
List five semesters and is also a member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.
Noffke is the recipient of a Wisconsin Space Research Grant and is currently
publishing an article in his field of research. He has also spoken at professional
conferences in his field of research.
Noffke helped the Eagles to a second-place finish at the WIAC Championships
this season by winning the 200-yard backstroke and participating on the winning
400-yard medley relay team. He holds the school record in the 200-yard backstroke.
Noffke is vice president of the Physics Club and is also a member of the Society
of Physics Students, Optical Society of America and American Physical Society.
He has also served as a physics tutor for general physics courses and a teaching
assistant for experimental physics lab and optics lab.
Sievers, a senior from Duluth, Minn. (Proctor H.S.), is majoring in biology
and minoring in chemistry and psychology. He maintains a 3.58 grade point average
and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Sievers has also
earned recognition on UW-Stevens Point's Dean's List three semesters.
Sievers, a team captain, helped the Pointers to their fifth straight WIAC title
this season by winning the 50-yard freestyle, participating on the first-place
200-yard freestyle relay team and placing second in three additional events.
He was a three-time Honorable Mention All-America selection a year ago, as well
as a three-time league champion.
Sievers is a member of the UW-Stevens Point Pre-Medicine Club and has applied
for admission to both Medical and Dental School.
UW-Eau Claire's Chris Straw and John Welch were also nominated for this year's
scholar-athlete award.
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is sponsored by Culver's. In order to be nominated
for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade
point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate
this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

Oshkosh,
Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point won its fifth straight Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's swimming and diving championship
following completion of the three-day league meet at UW-Oshkosh's Albee Hall
on February 21.
The Pointers, who have won seven of the last eight titles, finished with 930
team points. UW-La Crosse was second (898.50), followed by UW-Eau Claire (363),
UW-Whitewater (345.50), UW-Oshkosh (311) and UW-River Falls (303).
UW-Stevens Point claimed five individual titles and one relay crown on their
way to the title. Matt Sievers won the 50-yard freestyle for the second straight
season with a time of 21.41, while Garth Newport captured the 100-yard butterfly
with a winning time of 50.75.
The Pointers' Matt Grunwald won the 200-yard butterfly for the second consecutive
year with a time of 1:55.90 and Alex Anderson defended his crown in the 200-yard
individual medley with a first-place time of 1:56.03. Peter Nowak claimed the
400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:21.02.
UW-Stevens Point's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Aaron Marshall, Tyler Eloranta,
Anderson and Sievers won the event with a time of 1:24.43.
UW-La Crosse's Shane Ryan won three events en route to being voted the Swimmer
of the Meet for the second straight season. Ryan successfully defended his titles
in the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle with times
of 1:42.30, 4:45.07 and 16:41.60, respectively.
The Eagles' Trevor Rowlands claimed the 100-yard freestyle for the second straight
year with a time of 47.23, while Paul Noffke won the 200-yard backstroke for
the second time in his career with a time of 1:55.01. He also won the title
during the 2002 championship.
UW-La Crosse also claimed four relay titles during the three-day league competition,
successfully defending their crowns in the 400-yard freestyle relay and 800-yard
freestyle relay. Travis Martin, Josh Mork, Rowlands, and Ryan won the 400-yard
freestyle relay with a time of 3:07.54, while Ethan Kaercher, Rowlands, Mork
and Ryan set a conference record in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time
of 6:56.54.
David Dettmann, Matthew Spurr, Ryan and Rowlands teamed to win the 200-yard
medley relay for the Eagles with a time of 1:33.64, while Noffke, Dettmann,
Spurr and Rowlands claimed the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:26.17.
UW-Oshkosh's Yusuke Iimori won the 100-yard breaststroke for the second straight
season with a time of 57.05. He established a conference record in the preliminaries
of the event with a time of 56.69. Iimori also won the 200-yard breaststroke
with a conference-record time of 2:05.44.
UW-Oshkosh's Chris Hansman earned Diver of the Meet honors for the second straight
year after successfully defending his titles in the one-meter and three-meter
diving events with marks of 485.70 and 508.45, respectively. He won the three-meter
event for the fourth consecutive season and the one-meter event for the third
straight year. Hansman joins UW-Eau Claire's Jim Brennan (1978-81) as the only
individuals in conference history to win the three-meter diving crown four straight
seasons.
UW-Whitewater's Craig Lashley captured the 100-yard backstroke crown with a
time of 53.23.
UW-Stevens Point head coach Al Boelk was voted the Coach of the Year by the
league coaches for the second straight season and fifth time in his career.
He also won the award in 2001, 2000 and 1998.
