UW-Stevens Point Leads WIAC Contingent At NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships

NCAA Swimming and DivingAtlanta, Ga.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point placed 18th out of 47 teams to led a league contingent of three teams that finished in the top 36 at the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships held at Emory (Ga.) University on March 20-22.

The Pointers totaled 48 team points, while UW-Oshkosh tied for 22nd with 34 points and UW-La Crosse finished 36th with 11 points.

Kenyon (Ohio) won its 24th straight national title with 756.50 team points. Johns Hopkins (Md.) finished second with 384.50 points, followed by Emory (Ga.) with 292 points, Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) with 272 points and Denison (Ohio) with 258 points.

UW-Stevens Point was led individually by Alex Anderson who placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.81. He also finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.04.

UW-Stevens Point's 200-yard medley relay team of Thad Gunther, Aaron Marshall, Matt Sievers and Anderson finished 12th with a time of 1:34.99. The same quartet teamed to finish 15th in the 400-yard medley relay of 3:31.79 and 16th in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:25.39.

UW-La Crosse's David Dettman finished 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.15. The Eagles' 200-yard medley relay team of Shane Ryan, David Dettman, Ethan Kaercher and Trevor Rowlands finished 13th with a time of 1:35.01, while the 800-yard freestyle relay squad of Travis Martin, Ryan, Rowlands and Kaercher placed 16th with a time of 7:03.56.

UW-Oshkosh's Yusuke Iimori placed eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.43. The Titans' Chris Hansman finished seventh in three-meter diving and eighth in one-meter diving with scores of 424.50 and 405.50, respectively.

UW-Eau Claire's Dan Von Feldt finished 20th in three-meter diving and 21st in the one-meter event with scores of 314.75 and 276.40, respectively.

UW-Stevens Point Wins Fourth Straight
Men's Swimming and Diving Championship

WIAC Championship TrophyStevens Point, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point won its fourth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's swimming and diving championship following completion of the three-day league gala at the UW-Stevens Point Aquatics Center on February 22.

The Pointers, who have won six of the last seven titles, finished with 967 team points. UW-La Crosse was second (856), followed by UW-Eau Claire (376), UW-Whitewater (334), UW-Oshkosh (333) and UW-River Falls (318).

UW-Stevens Point was led by Alex Anderson, Matt Grunwald and Travis Wolf who each won a pair of individual titles. Anderson claimed the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:06.82 and 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.21. Grunwald captured the 100-yard butterfly in 51.57 and the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.21. Wolf won the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke titles with times of 53.07 and 1:55.60, respectively.

UW-Stevens Point's Matt Sievers won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.37, while Thad Gunther claimed the remaining individual title for the Pointers, winning the 400-yard individual medley in 4:13.36.

The Pointers also claimed three of the five relay events at the conference meet. The 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Anderson, Gunther, Sievers and Aaron Marshall won in 1:24.00. Anderson, Gunther and Garth Newport were on the other two winning relays, teaming with Sievers to win the 200-yard medley in 1:33.87 and matching up with Marshall in the 400-yard medley with a time of 3:29.23.

UW-La Crosse's Shane Ryan won three individual titles to capture the Swimmer of the Meet award. He won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.75, the 500-yard freestyle in 4:40.94 and the 1650-yard freestyle in 16:42.59.

Trevor Rowlands claimed the fourth individual title for the Eagles, winning the 100-yard freestyle in 46.91.

The Eagles' 400-yard freestyle relay team of Rowlands, Ryan, Travis Martin and Ethan Kaercher won with a time of 3:07.06. Rowlands, Ryan, Kaercher and Josh Mork teamed to win the 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:00.06.

UW-Oshkosh's Chris Hansman won both the one-meter and three-meter diving crowns. He won the one-meter event with a score of 464.75 and the three-meter competition with a score of 480.55. The title in the three-meter event was his third-straight league crown, while the one-meter victory was his second straight. Hansman received the Diver of the Meet award for his efforts.

UW-Oshkosh's Yusuke Iimori set the lone conference record at the meet with a winning time of 56.70 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

UW-Stevens Point head coach Al Boelk was voted the league's Coach of the Year for the third time in his career. He also won the award in 2001, 2000 and 1998.

UW-Stevens Point's Anderson Named Division III
National Swimmer of the Week

Stevens Point, Wis.--UW-Stevens Point freshman Alex Anderson has been named the NCAA Division III men’s swimmer of the week by collegeswimming.com for his performance at last weekend’s Wheaton College Five-Way Dual.

Anderson, a La Crosse, Wis. native, won the 200-yard breaststroke title with a time of 2:09.93. He also placed second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.44, missing first place by just over one-tenth of a second. Anderson was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and swam on the second-place 400-yard medley relay team.

Anderson is the first Pointer swimmer ever to earn the weekly national honor. Earlier this week, he was named the WIAC swimmer of the week.

Henderson Named River Falls Men's, Women's Swimming & Diving Coach

River Falls, Wis.--Bill Henderson has been named head men's and women's swimming & diving coach at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Henderson has several years of coaching experience at the college, high school and club levels. In the 2001-02 season he was a volunteer coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The men's team placed fourth and the women's team fifth in last year's Big West Conference meet.

He was the head coach for two years (1999-2001) at Foothill, Calif., Community College and for one year (1997-98) at Solano, Calif., Community College. He taught a variety of physical education classes at Stanford, Calif., University (2000-2001) and at Solano (1997-98). Since 2001 he was the head age group coach for the San Luis Obispo swim team where he coached both age group and masters swimmers. He was also the head coach of the South Coast Aquatics (1995-96) and the Sierra Marlins teams (1984-1995). The South Coast Aquatics and Sierra Marlins are both year round swim programs and he coached national champions and junior national champion finalists. Henderson is a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association and served as Club Development Chair of Sierra Nevada Swimming (1994-95).

Henderson earned his M.S. degree in physical education in 1995 from Cal State Sacramento and his B.A. degree in journalism from the same institution in 1985. He will also teach classes in the UWRF Health & Human Performance department.
