UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater Capture NCAA Men’s Basketball Spots
Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater will represent the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament and compete in opening round contests on March 7-8.
UW-Whitewater earned an automatic bid into the 59-team field by winning the WIAC Tournament championship, while the Pointers received an at-large bid.
This marks the second time in the last three seasons the conference has had multiple teams participate in the NCAA event. UW-La Crosse, UW-Stout and the Warhawks represented the league in 2006.
UW-Whitewater (24-4) is making the 14th NCAA appearance in program history and won the national championship in 1984 and 1989, while registering a fourth-place finish in 1983. The Warhawks will host first and second round games on March 7-8 involving Loras College (Iowa), Lawrence University and Wheaton College (Ill.)
UW-Stevens Point (22-6) is appearing in its fifth NCAA tournament in the last six years and seventh in program archives. The Pointers won national titles in 2004 and 2005. This season, UW-Stevens Point will travel to the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), along with University of Chicago (Ill.) and Buena Vista University (Iowa).
