Warhawks Claim Men’s Basketball Championship
Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater won the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men’s basketball championship with an 80-75 triumph over UW-River Falls at Kachel Gymnasium on Feb. 23.
The Warhawks finished with a league mark of 13-3 to outdistance UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point’s 12-4 record against conference foes. The Pointers could have earned a share of the title, but fell by an 84-65 margin against the Pioneers later in the day.
The conference championship for the Warhawks is the 12th in program history and second in the last three years.
UW-Whitewater also secured the top seed for the WIAC Tournament, which begins on Feb. 25. The Warhawks will host eighth-seeded UW-Stout in the quarterfinals, while second-seeded UW-Platteville will face seventh-seeded UW-Eau Claire. Additional quarterfinal pairings include fifth-seeded UW-Superior at fourth-seeded UW-Oshkosh and sixth-seeded UW-La Crosse at three-seeded UW-Stevens Point.
The winner of the conference tournament receives the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
