Four Named To Men's Ice Hockey All-America Team

Madison, Wis.--Four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's ice hockey players have been named to the 2005 CCM American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-America Team. UW-River Falls' Garrett Larson and UW-Superior's Mike Wiggins were named to the first team, while UW-Superior's Dale Lupul and Kyle Nosan were second team selections.

Larson, a senior forward from Park River, N.D., led the Falcons in scoring with 20 goals and 42 points. He also led the team with eight power-play goals and two game-winning efforts. Larson becomes the 24th Falcon hockey player to earn All-America honors.

Wiggins, a senior forward from Calgary, Alberta, led the NCAA Division III with 30 goals during the 2004-05 campaign. He also added 17 assists for 47 points. Wiggins was named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Year this season.

Lupul, a senior defenseman from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, earned All-America Second Team honors for the second straight season. This year, he was second on the squad with 26 assists and added three goals for 29 points.

Nosan, a senior forward from Baudette, Minn., registered a team-leading 27 assists and added 12 goals for 39 points this season.

The CCM All-American Ice Hockey Teams are sponsored by CCM, an international leader in hockey equipment, and chosen by members of the AHCA.

UW-Superior's Nosan Named Men's Ice Hockey Scholar-Athlete

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Superior's Kyle Nosan has been named the 2005 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Men's Ice Hockey Scholar-Athlete, it was announced recently by WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner.

Nosan, a senior from Baudette, Minn., is majoring in criminal justice with a minor in sociology and maintains a 3.46 grade point average. He has been recognized on UW-Superior's Dean's List and is also a member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Nosan has also been named to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) All-Academic Team the past two seasons.

Nosan, a two-year team captain, was recently named to the all-WIAC and all-NCHA first teams for the second straight year. He was named his team's MVP and UW-Superior's Male Athlete of the Year during the 2003-04 campaign. Nosan is one of 26 individuals in school history to play in more than 100 games and record more than 100 points.

Nosan has been voted on the UW-Superior Student Senate and has led his team's efforts in the Northland Buddy Walk, an event that benefits individuals suffering from Down Syndrome.

Nosan becomes the sixth UW-Superior men's ice hockey student-athlete to receive the conference's scholar-athlete award. He joins Nathan Ziemski (2003), Tom Pink (2000), Brent Shaback (1997), Vance Mattson (1995) and Brian Swanson (1986) as recipients of the award.

UW-River Falls' Tony Sikich and UW-Stout's Kory Mortel were also nominated for this year's scholar-athlete award.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is sponsored by Culver's. In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

UW-River Falls Claims Men's Ice Hockey Title

WIAC Championship TrophyMadison, Wis.--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls men's ice hockey team claimed the 2005 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) title with a 5-2 victory over UW-Eau Claire on February 12 at Hunt Arena in River Falls.

The Falcons (16-7-2, 6-2-0 WIAC) entered the night with 10 points, one-point behind league-leading UW-Superior, and needed at least a tie with the Blugolds to secure a share of the crown.

The conference title for the Falcons is their second-straight and 11th in school history (2004, 2003, 2001, 1999, 1988, 1987, 1986, 1985, 1984, 1983, 1982). The 11 league championships are the most in conference history.

Aaron Degerness opened the scoring for UW-River Falls against UW-Eau Claire with a goal at 12:34 of the first period. The Falcons blew the game open with three second period goals. Garrett Larson scored at 5:58 and Tony Sikich added a pair of power-play goals in the decisive stanza.

UW-Eau Claire received goals from Phil Cherneski and Brooks Lockwood in the third period, while Wade Harstad scored the final goal for the Falcons.

Andy Scanlon made 21 saves for the No. 11-randed Falcons to improve his record to 7-4-2 on the season. UW-River Falls had a season-high 53 shots on goal, including 25 in the second period.
