UW-Eau Claire's Loney and UW-Oshkosh's Young Named To Women's Golf All-America Team

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Maggie Loney and UW-Oshkosh's Jennifer Young have been named to the 2005 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-America Team. Loney was named to the first team, while Young was a second team selection.
Loney, a junior from River Falls, Wis., claimed All-America honors for the second straight year after receiving honorable mention accolades in 2004. This year, she placed fourth at the NCAA Division III Championship and claimed medalist honors at the WIAC Championship. She was named the WIAC Player of the Year and secured medalist honors at five invitationals. Loney was named the NGCA Freshman of the Year in 2003.
Loney becomes the second Blugold to earn All-America first team honors, joining Jennifer Prock who accomplished the feat in 2003.
Young, a sophomore from Salem, Wis. (Westosha H.S.), secured All-America second team status for the second consecutive season. She placed 18th at the national championship this year and average 80.4 strokes per round during the 2004-05 campaign.

Southern Pines, N.C.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire placed third out of 10 teams at the 2005 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships held May 10-13 at The Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club.
UW-Eau Claire finished with a four-day total of 1,337 (+185) to tie DePauw (Ind.) for third place in the team standings. The third-place finish for the Blugolds is the highest in school history.
Methodist (N.C.) won its eighth consecutive national championship with a 1,272 (+120), followed by Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) at 1,284 (+132), UW-Eau Claire, DePauw (Ind.), Mount Holyoke (Mass.) at 1,338 (+186), St. Mary's (Ind.) at 1,347 (+195), Wartburg (Iowa) at 1,356 (+204), Illinois Wesleyan at 1,358 (+206), St. Thomas (Minn.) at 1,376 (+224) and McMurry (Texas) at 1,445 (+293).
Charlotte Williams of Methodist won the individual title out of 60 participants, finishing with a 304 (76-73-76-79) (+16).
UW-Eau Claire was led by Maggie Loney who finished fourth overall with a four-day total of 312 (78-77-82-75) (+24) and Andrea Kloppman, who tied for 31st with 343 (88-84-83-88) (+55). Jessie Thompson tied for 36th (79-88-92-86) (+57), Meghan Sobotta tied for 38th (89-86-85-86) (+58) and Kelly Gerzsenyi tied for 46th (91-85-86-88) (+62).
UW-Oshkosh had a pair of individuals compete in the championship as individuals. Jennifer Young tied for 18th with a four-day score of 334 (81-93-83-77) (+46), while Cheryl Treadwell tied for 33rd with 344 (83-92-84-85) (+56).

UW-Eau Claire To Compete In NCAA Women's Golf Championship

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has been selected to participate in the 2005 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships, which will be held May 10-13 at The Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. UW-Oshkosh's Cheryl Treadwell and Jennifer Young have also been selected as individuals to participate in the event.
UW-Eau Claire is one of 10 teams that will participate in the tournament, along with 10 individuals. The Blugolds, who claimed the WIAC title this past fall, are making their fifth straight NCAA Division III Championship appearance. They posted their highest team finish a year ago, placing fifth out of 10 schools.
Maggie Loney leads the Blugolds after claiming medalist honors at the 2004 WIAC Championship. She tied for seventh at last year's NCAA Championship with a four-day score of 322 and earned National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-America Honorable Mention honors.
The Titan's Jennifer Young claimed NCGA All-America Second Team accolades a season ago and finished 36th at the NCAA Division III Championship with a four-day score of 342. Cheryl Treadwell was a NGCA All-America Honorable Mention choice in 2004 and placed 22nd at the national meet with a four-day score of 334.
The NCAA Division III Women's Golf Committee selected 10 teams, two teams from each of the five regions, for the championships. In addition, 10 individuals not from selected teams also qualified for the championships. Regions 2 and 3 received three individual berths, Region 4 received two individual berths, and Regions 1 and 5 received one individual berth each. The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is located in Region 3.
The championships will consist of both team and individual competition conducted concurrently. The tournament consists of 72 holes of play over four days of competition. In the team competition, the low four scores from each team for each day will count in the team's total score.

UW-River Falls' Berndt Named Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-River Falls' Ellen Berndt has
been named the 2004 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy
Kruckman Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete, it was announced recently by WIAC Commissioner
Gary Karner.
Berndt, a senior from Rice Lake, Wis., is majoring in accounting and maintains
a 3.906 grade point average. She is a two-time member of the WIAC Scholastic
Honor Roll and has been named to the UW-River Falls Dean's List. Berndt has
also earned Junior Honors from her institution.
Berndt, a team captain, finished second overall at the 2004 WIAC Championship
and helped the Falcons to the best finish in school history with a third-place
standing. She placed fifth at the 2002 conference meet and also claimed All-WIAC
second team accolades. Berndt was voted the team's Most Valuable Player last
season.
Berndt is a member of the Accounting Society and is also an active participant
in intramurals.
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is sponsored by Culver's. In order to be nominated
for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade
point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate
this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

Stevens Point,
Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire secured the 2004 women's golf title
following competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)
Championship held Saturday-Sunday, October 9-10 at Stevens Point Country Club.
The team championship for the Blugolds is the third in school history as they
also won league crowns in 2001 and 1998.
The Blugolds finished with a two-day total of 669 strokes during the 36-hole
event to edge UW-Platteville, which finished second with 692 strokes. The second-place
finish for the Pioneers is the best in school history. UW-River Falls led UW-Eau
Claire, 346-347, heading into Sunday's final round and also claimed the best
finish in team history with a third-place standing of 693 strokes.
UW-Stevens Point finished fourth with 722 strokes, followed by UW-Whitewater
with 739 strokes, two-time defending champion UW-Oshkosh with 745 strokes and
UW-Superior with 803 strokes.
UW-Eau Claire claimed three of the top five individual performances at the championship
with Maggie Loney securing medalist honors with 160 strokes. Loney shot an 84
during Saturday's round to place third overall and followed that performance
with a 76 during Sunday's round. She becomes the second-straight Blugold, and
fourth overall, to claim top honors at the conference meet. Susan Karlman earned
top honors a season ago, while Kristi Moss and Kelly Harper were the top finishers
in 2001 and 1998, respectively.
UW-Eau Claire's Meghan Sobotta placed third at this year's meet with 165 strokes
and Jessica Thompson finished fifth with 168 strokes.
Rounding out the top eight positions were UW-River Falls' Ellen Berndt, who
finished second with 162 strokes, followed by UW-Platteville's Ahna Hendrickson
in fourth with 167 strokes, UW-River Falls' Gabe Van Dyk in sixth with 169 strokes,
UW-Platteville's Linda Engelke and UW-Oshkosh's Liz Buske in seventh with 172
strokes and UW-Stevens Point's Susie Lewis in eighth with 173 strokes.
Ellen Berndt received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award, while UW-River
Falls head coach Jeff Berkhof was voted the conference Coach of the Year.

Five Receive NCGA Scholar-Athlete Honors

Madison, Wis.--Five Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)
women's golfers have been named to the 2003-04 National Golf Coaches Association
(NCGA) All-America Scholar Team.
UW-Eau Claire's Susan Karlman, UW-Oshkosh's Marcia Perry and Cheryl Treadwell
and UW-Whitewater's Kendall Egnarski and Lisa Irons were among the 61 individuals
from NCAA Division III that were recognized on the squad. Karlman, Perry and
Irons earned NCGA scholar-athlete honors for the second consecutive season.
The NCGA annually honors golfers in NCAA Division I, II and III for their success
in the classroom and on the golf course. All-American Scholar Team members must
maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 and participate in
at least 66 percent of their squad's regular season schedule.

Battaglia Named UW-Stevens Point Women's Golf Coach

Stevens Point, Wis.--Joe Battaglia, the head golf professional
at Tri-City Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids, will lead the University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point women's golf program during the 2004-05 season.
Battaglia will be a part-time staff member at UW-Stevens Point and take over
a squad that placed fourth in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
last season. He is a UW-Stevens Point graduate and worked as an assistant pro
at Sentryworld Golf Course in Stevens Point from 1994 to 1997. He also spent
time as an assistant pro at courses in Scottsdale, Ariz., Paradise Valley, Ariz.,
Sun Valley, Ariz. and Ivanhoe, Ill.
As a player, Battaglia competes in Wisconsin PGA events and also took part in
the Pepsi Tour and Western States Tour while in Arizona.
"We're very excited to have an individual of Joe's caliber coaching our
golf team," UW-Stevens Point athletic director Frank O'Brien said. "He
brings a strong background and will be a great addition to our program."
Battaglia replaces Mike Okray, who coached the Pointers the past four seasons
and resigned to take a staff position at Sentryworld.
