UW-Oshkosh Names Gaubatz Women's Golf Coach
RELEASED: Monday, August 4, 2003
Oshkosh, Wis.--Tim Gaubatz, who has served UW-Oshkosh as assistant men's
basketball coach for the past 11 years, has been named the school's new head
women's golf coach.
Gaubatz inherits his women's golf coaching duties from Kris Schoonover, who
built the program from its infancy in 1996 into a national power. Schoonover
resigned from her position in June following the Titans' fifth-place finish
at the NCAA Division III Championship. She will remain at UW-Oshkosh as assistant
women's basketball coach and marketing director for the athletics department.
"I'm thrilled about the opportunity to be a part of this successful program,"
said Gaubatz. "We have a strong nucleus of players returning who can help
us get back to the NCAA Division III Championship."
UW-Oshkosh's effort in returning to the NCAA Division III Championship will
be aided by the return of Brian Zinda as assistant coach. Zinda, a former member
of the UW-Oshkosh men's team, is the club professional at Whispering Springs
Golf Club in Fond du Lac, the home course for the Titans. Gaubatz has also asked
Schoonover, who was named the 2003 national co-coach of the year, to remain
involved with the program this season as a volunteer assistant coach.
"Kris and Brian have a tremendous relationship with the ladies and I didn't
want to disrupt that," said Gaubatz. "It is also important that we
keep the staff together to help us repeat as conference champion and improve
our standing at nationals.
Gaubatz, an avid golfer, joined the men's basketball coaching staff of head
coach Ted Van Dellen in 1993. Since then, the Titans have made five appearances
in the NCAA Division III Championship. This past year, UW-Oshkosh fashioned
a 25-7 record and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III
Championship.
In addition to both of his coaching duties, Gaubatz will also assist director
of athletics Allen Ackerman in the athletics department's fund-raising.
Gaubatz, 36, received his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin
in 1989 and a master's degree from UW-Oshkosh in 1996. The Sheboygan native
and his wife, Tami, live in Oshkosh with their children, T.J. and Tiana.
