Four Named To NGCA All-American Scholar Team

Madison, Wis.--Four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's golfers have been named to the 2002-03 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar Team. UW-Eau Claire's Susan Karlman, UW-Oshkosh's Marcia Perry, UW-Platteville's Krista Puttkammer and UW-Whitewater's Lisa Irons were named to the squad.
The league foursome represented 43 NCAA Division III student-athletes nationwide to earn the scholastic distinction.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative grade point average is 3.50 (3.40 for seniors) and student-athletes must have competed in at least 66% of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

Three Earn Women's Golf Honorable Mention All-America Honors, UW-Oshkosh's Schoonover Named Co-National Coach of the Year

Madison, Wis.--Three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)
women's golfers have been named to the 2003 National Golf Coaches Association
(NCGA) NCAA Division III Honorable Mention All-America Team. UW-Eau Claire's
Jennifer Prock, UW-Oshkosh's Carrie Detjen and UW-Whitewater's Lisa Irons were
selected to the team.
Prock, a junior from Eau Claire, Wis. (Memorial H.S.), placed third overall
at the NCAA Division III Championship and finished fifth at the WIAC Championship.
She won the UW-Whitewater Invitational on September 7-8.
Detjen, a junior from Two Rivers, Wis., placed 43rd overall at the NCAA Division
III Championship and finished ninth at the WIAC Championship. She won the UW-Eau
Claire Invitational on August 31-September 1.
Irons, a junior from Neenah, Wis. (Neenah-Menasha H.S.), finished 28th at the
national meet and placed ninth at the league meet. She won the UW-Stevens Point
Invitational on September 14-15.
UW-Oshkosh head coach Kris Schoonover was named the NCAA Division III Region
3 Coach of the Year and Co-National Coach of the Year after directing the Titans
to the first team appearance at the NCAA Division III Championship in school
history. The Titans placed fifth out of the 10 teams that were invited to the
national meet. Schoonover also received the regional coaching honor in 2001.
Schoonover shared the national coaching honor with Michelle Morgan of Amherst
College (Mass.).

Green
Lake, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh placed fifth and UW-Eau Claire
finished sixth out of 10 teams at the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship
held Tuesday-Friday, May 13-16 at The Golf Courses of Lawsonia.
UW-Oshkosh, which was making the first team appearance in school history, finished
with a four-day total of 1361 (+193), while UW-Eau Claire finished with a four-day
mark of 1364 (+196). The finish for the Blugolds was the best in school history
after recording a seventh-place finish last year.
Methodist (N.C.) won its sixth straight title with a 1,295 (+127), followed
by Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) 1,348 (+180), DePauw (Ind.) 1,349 (+181) and St.
Mary's (Ind.) 1,353 (+185). Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) finished seventh 1,393
(+225), followed by St. Lawrence (N.Y.) 1,400 (+232), Simpson (Iowa) 1,406 (+238)
and McMurry (Texas) 1,440 (+272).
UW-Oshkosh was led by Amy Simon who finished 13th overall with a four-day total
of 334 (88-82-81-83) (+42) and Cheryl Treadwell who tied for 20th with 339 (80-87-83-89)
(+47). Kristin Huth tied for 38th with 354 (97-89-85-83) (+62), Marcia Perry
tied for 41st with 355 (90-86-89-90) (+63) and Carrie Detjen tied for 43rd with
356 (85-101-84-86) (+64).
UW-Eau Claire was led by Jennifer Prock who tied for third overall with a total
of 323 (85-77-82-79) (+31) and Maggie Loney tied for 15th with 336 (84-86-83-83)
(+44). Susan Karlman tied for 28th with 347 (88-86-88-85) (+55), Karen Law placed
50th with 363 (98-92-92-81) (+71) and Crystal O'Connell finished 52nd with 367
(94-93-91-89) (+75).
UW-Whitewater's Lisa Irons also participated in the championship as an individual.
She finished in a tie for 28th place out of 59 competitors with a four-day total
of 347 (88-87-88-84) (+55).

Two Teams and One Individual Invited To NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and UW-Oshkosh have
been invited to participate in the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship
scheduled to be held May 13-16 at The Golf Courses of Lawsonia in Green Lake,
Wisconsin. UW-Whitewater's Lisa Irons will compete in the tournament as an individual.
UW-Eau Claire is making its third straight trip to the national meet. The Blugolds
finished seventh at last year's championship and ninth in 2001.
UW-Oshkosh, the reigning WIAC champion, will be making its first appearance
in the NCAA Division III Championship as a team entrant, after sending the now-graduated
Markka Farrington to the meet in each of the past two seasons.
UW-Whitewater's Lisa Irons placed ninth at the 2002 WIAC Championship after
finishing seventh in 2001 and third in 2000. This marks the third straight season
the Warhawks have sent an individual to the national meet. Christy Huegerich
represented the squad the past two seasons.
A selection committee picked ten teams, two teams from each of the five regions,
for the championships. In addition, ten individuals not from selected teams
also qualified for the championships. Regions 2 and 3 received three individual
berths, Region 4 received two individual berths, and Regions 1 and 5 received
one individual berth each.
The championships will consist of both team and individual competition conducted
concurrently. The tournament consists of 72 holes of play over four days of
competition. In the team competition, the low four scores from each team for
each day will count in the team's total score.

Platteville's Puttkammer Named Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Krista Puttkammer
has been named the 2002 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC)
Judy Kruckman Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete, it was announced recently by WIAC
Commissioner Gary Karner.
Puttkammer, a senior from Tomah, Wis., is majoring in civil engineering with
a 3.82 grade point average. She is a member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll
and has been named to her institution's Chancellor's List three semesters and
Dean's List three semesters. Puttkammer was Platteville's National Student-Athlete
Day Representative and is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma, Alpha Lambda Delta,
Tau Beta Phi and Chi Epsilon honor societies.
Puttkammer led the Pioneers at the 2002 WIAC championship with a 12th-place
finish. She fired a 90 on the first day of competition and followed that performance
with an 87. Puttkammer finished 15th last season at the league meet. Earlier
this year, she became the first women's golfer in Platteville history to win
the conference's athlete of the week award.
She is also the first Pioneer women's golfer to win the conference's scholar-athlete
honor.
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is sponsored by Culver's. In order to be nominated
for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade
point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate
this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

UW-Oshkosh Wins League Championship
Oshkosh,
Wis.--Owning the top-three individual finishers, UW-Oshkosh captured the
team title at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's
Golf Championship held Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 5-6) at the Whispering Springs
Golf Club in Fond du Lac, Wis.
UW-Oshkosh, which also won the 36-hole event in 2000, claimed this year's championship
with 676 strokes. Defending champion UW-Eau Claire finished second with 695
strokes, while UW-Stevens Point finished third with 731, UW-Whitewater fourth
with 737, UW-Platteville fifth with 746 and UW-River Falls sixth with 784. UW-Oshkosh
led UW-Eau Claire, 340-341, heading into Sunday's final round on the Titans'
home course.
UW-Oshkosh swept the top-three individual positions as Cheryl Treadwell took
medalist honors with a 167, including a championship-best 81 on Sunday. She
becomes the second WIAC individual champion from UW-Oshkosh, joining Markka
Farrington who took medalist honors in 2000. Treadwell's teammates Amy Simon
and Marcia Perry finished second and third, respectively, by compiling 168 strokes.
Simon was awarded second place based on her lower score on the final six holes
of the championship.
Rounding out the top-eight positions were fourth-place Maggie Loney of UW-Eau
Claire with a 170, fifth-place Ellen Berndt of UW-River Falls with a 171, sixth-place
Andrea Miller of UW-Stevens Point with a 171, seventh-place Jennifer Prock of
UW-Eau Claire with a 171 and eighth-place Kristin Huth of UW-Oshkosh with a
173. Miller was a second-place finisher a year ago. Ties were again broken by
the lower score on the final six holes.
John Rawdon of UW-Eau Claire and Peter Reif of UW-Platteville were named WIAC
Co-Coaches of the Year, while Krista Puttkammer of UW-Platteville was named
the league's Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an award sponsored by
Culver's.

Berkhof Named River Falls Women's Golf Coach

River Falls, Wis.--Jeff Berkhof has been named the head coach of the
University of Wisconsin-River Falls women's golf team which will play its first
season this fall.
"I am happy that Jeff has agreed to get us started," UWRF interim
athletic director Rick Bowen said. "He is the most qualified person on
our current staff for the job. It is important that we make this move now as
much work must be done to field our first varsity team next fall. Jeff will
get the program started this summer and coach the team next fall. After the
season Jeff and I have agreed to take a look at the situation and see where
we are at that time."
Berkhof has spent the last 10 years as an assistant men's basketball coach at
UWRF. Before joining the coaching ranks, he spent two seasons playing for Bowen
at UWRF. During his senior season, he was selected to the 1993-94 All-WSUC team
and was chosen Co-MVP and Co-Captain by his teammates. In addition to his on
the floor coaching duties and administrative tasks, he directs the Falcon recruiting
efforts, coordinates scouting and film exchange, and is director of the Falcon
summer basketball camps and the annual high school varsity tournament - the
Great Falcon Shootout.
While a member of the UWRF athletic department staff, Berkhof has also worked
as an assistant manager at the Kilkarney Hills Golf Course in River Falls for
the past five years.
The Hills, Minn., native is finishing his Masters of Education degree in Sport
Management at the University of Minnesota He completed his Bachelor of Science
degree in the spring of 1994 with a major in physical education and a minor
in athletic coaching. He resides in Hudson and is engaged to Jill Lidgerding,
a UWRF alum and fifth grade teacher at Lake Elmo, Minn.
