Blugolds and Warhawks Win NCAA Football First Round Contests
Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater won their first round games in the NCAA Division III Football Championship on Nov. 17.
The Blugolds (9-2) got a 28-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Schaeuble to Chris Hull with 46 seconds left in regulation to upend previously undefeated St. Norbert College (10-1), 24-20, in De Pere.
The Warhawks (10-1) broke open a close game with 14 points in the fourth quarter for a 34-14 triumph over Capital University (Ohio) (8-3) in Whitewater.
UW-Eau Claire will travel to Bethel University (Minn.) (10-1) for a second round game, while UW-Whitewater will host North Central College (Ill.) (9-2) in its next contest. Second round games will be held Nov. 24 at noon.
This marks the second straight year two teams from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference have advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs. The Warhawks and UW-La Crosse were second round participants last season.
