UW-Whitewater’s Beaver Named Player of the Year; UW-Eau Claire’s Glaser Named Coach of the Year

Justin BeaverMadison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater senior running back Justin Beaver was named the Player of the Year to headline the 2007 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Football Team that was selected by the league coaches.

Beaver secured first team recognition for the third consecutive season after directing the Warhawks to their third straight WIAC championship.  He ranks second in the conference with 1,640 rushing yards and 1,642 all-purpose yards.  Beaver surpassed the 100-yard rushing plateau in nine games, including a season-high 233 yards against UW-River Falls on Oct. 6.

Beaver is the conference’s all-time leader with 5,769 rushing yards and 1,051 rushing attempts, while ranking seventh with 38 rushing touchdowns.  He has eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in 29 of 42 career games and the 200-yard barrier in eight contests, including a career-high 286 yards against UW-La Crosse on Oct. 14, 2006.

UW-Whitewater has had seven individuals combine to win eight WIAC player of the year plaques.  Beaver becomes the third running back in program history to claim the prize, joining Mike Miller (1984) and Spencer Johnson (1994).

Repeat selections on the first team offense included:  UW-Oshkosh senior running back Andy Moriarty, along with UW-Whitewater senior center Brent Allen and sophomore kicker Jeff Schebler.

Moriarty is the school’s first three-time All-WIAC first team selection since Len Washington (1969-71).  He leads the league with 1,690 rushing yards, 16 rushing touchdowns, 1,933 all-purpose yards and 102 points scored, all school records.  Moriarty rushed for a league season-best 314 yards against UW-Platteville on Nov. 3 and had a WIAC-high 50 carries against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 27.

The school’s all-time leader with 4,496 rushing yards, 42 touchdowns and 262 points, Moriarty ranks second, third and eighth, respectively, on the conference’s all-time list.  He surpassed the 200-yard plateau seven times in his career, including a career-high 316 yards against UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 5, 2005.

Allen captured first team recognition for the second consecutive season.  He leads an offensive line that has allowed a league-low 19 sacks and helped the Warhawks lead the conference with 210.3 rushing yards per game and rank fourth with 386.3 yards of total offense per contest.

Schebler earned first team honors for the second straight year.  He has kicked a school-record 19 field goals this season and converted all 31 of his extra-point attempts to lead all WIAC kickers with 88 points scored.  He matched a school record with 52-yard field goals against St. Cloud State University (Minn.) on Sept. 15 and UW-Oshkosh on Oct. 13.  Schebler’s 37 career field goals leads the Warhawk record book and ranks second on the league’s chart.

Repeat choices on the first team defense included:  UW-Oshkosh senior linebacker Eric Stenbroten, UW-River Falls senior defensive lineman Greg Neumann and UW-Whitewater senior linebacker A.J. Raebel.

Stenbroten secured first team status for the second time in his career after receiving the honor in 2005 and second team accolades in 2006.   This year, he is second in the conference with 12.5 tackles for loss and third with seven quarterback sacks.  Stenbroten finished third on the team with 55 tackles, including 37 solo stops, and established a league season-best five tackles for loss against Ripon College on Sept. 1.  He set a Titan career record with 52 tackles for loss, a mark that ranks fifth on the WIAC chart.

Neumann claimed first team recognition for the second consecutive year after leading the WIAC with 12 quarterback sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss.  His 12 sacks rank second on UW-River Falls’ single-season list and his 24 career sacks are fourth on the school chart.  Neumann set a UW-River Falls single-game record with four quarterback sacks against UW-Stevens Point on Sept. 29.

Raebel earned first team honors for the third straight season.   In 2007, he has totaled a team-leading 64 tackles, including 36 solo efforts, and added 8.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 quarterback sacks.  Raebel ranks second on the school’s all-time list with 312 tackles, just shy of the mark of 320 set by Jim Walters (1970-73).

Also named to the first team offense this season were: UW-Eau Claire senior offensive lineman Marc Moonen, senior all-purpose back Tony Hull and senior punter Mitch Schaeuble, UW-La Crosse senior running back Dan Hall, senior offensive lineman Randy Gyllin and senior wide receiver Ted Everson, UW-Oshkosh senior tight end Kyle Kubasa and senior offensive lineman Andy Versnik, UW-River Falls senior offensive lineman Jordan Miller and freshman wide receiver Michael Zweifel, UW-Stout senior return specialist Shawn Korth and UW-Whitewater senior quarterback Danny Jones and senior wide receiver Neil Mrkvicka.

UW-Eau Claire head coach Todd Glaser was voted the George Chryst Coach of the Year after directing the Blugolds to an overall record of 8-2 and a second-place finish in the eight-team league derby after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll.  UW-Eau Claire also received an at-large bid into the NCAA Division III playoffs.   Glaser is in his second season with the Blugolds and compiled an 11-9 record.

Named to the inaugural All-Sportsmanship Team were: UW-Eau Claire’s Marc Davis, UW-La Crosse’s Brian Edmiston, UW-Oshkosh’s Josh Wara, UW-Platteville’s Nolan Krajco, UW-River Falls’ Jamie Bisch, UW-Stevens Point’s Lincoln Berg, UW-Stout’s Marshall Lehman and UW-Whitewater’s Cal Schmidt.  The team was selected for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school as selected by that school.
