Three To Represent WIAC In Aztec Bowl
Madison, Wis.--Three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) individuals have been selected to participate in the 2007 Aztec Bowl in Chihuahua, Mexico on Dec. 8. The individuals were selected by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and USA Football.
UW-Stevens Point’s Kasey Morgan and UW-Stout’s Wendell Eskridge will represent the WIAC in this year’s event as part of the 50-member roster that is made up of NCAA Division III seniors from around the country. UW-Stout defensive coordinator Clayt Birmingham will serve as an assistant coach for the contest.
The Aztec Bowl is the traditional season-ending game for Mexico’s college football schedule. The game has been played 36 times since 1947 with the last nine contests featuring the United States-Mexico match-up. The United States leads the series, 9-1.
A senior defensive back from Iola, Wis. (Iola-Scandinavia H.S.), Morgan is the eighth individual in program history to participate in the Aztec Bowl. He joins Clint Kriewaldt (LB, 1998), Mark Fetzer (DL, 1999), Paul Schmitt (DE, 2001), Dillon Maney (DB, 2002), Scott Krause (QB, 2003), Clint Bakken (DL, 2004) and Cody Childs (RB, 2006).
Eskridge, a senior defensive back from Milwaukee, Wis. (Custer H.S.), is the sixth Blue Devil to participate in the all-star contest. He joins Jeff Hazuga (DL, 2000), Jamie Spielman (LB, 2002), Luke Bundgaard (RB, 2003), Ben Knepper (OT, 2003) and Joe Seep (DB, 2005).
Birmingham is making his first coaching appearance in the Aztec Bowl. He completed his first season as defensive coordinator at the UW-Stout in 2007.
This year’s Aztec Bowl will kick off at 6 p.m. CST on Dec. 8 and will be played at Estadio Olimpico. The game can be heard via a webcast that can be accessed on the AFCA’s website at www.afca.com. Results will also be available on the AFCA’s website.
