Wisconsin Rapids native Justin Bach's RBI single gave UW-La Crosse a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th and the Eagles went on to record 5-4 victory over UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament at Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids. UW-L advances to play UW-Whitewater Saturday at 7 p.m. in a winner's game. UW-Oshkosh will play UW-Stevens Point at 4:45 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game. Tony Peterson opened the 10th with a single for UW-L (22-17) and moved to second on Matt Sampson's sacrifice bunt. After Steve Ems walked, Bach singled to right field scoring Peterson. Mike Schmidt followed with an RBI double for the Eagles to make it 5-3. UW-Oshkosh (27-14) had its first two runners reach in the bottom of the 10th as Jason Fosler and Andrew Stendahl both singled. Pete Berg then sacrificed both runners into scoring position with one-out. Mike Ackley pinch-hit for the Titans and grounded out to second scoring Fosler with Stendahl advancing to third. Matt Zurbriggen then struck out Bryan Schwebke to end the game. The victory marks UW-L's first WIAC Tournament win since 2002.
UW-L scored twice in the top of the first as Bach singled in John Stetzenbach and Peterson scored on a passed ball. The Eagles left the bases-loaded in the inning as Trevor Wallace grounded out to second. UW-O tied the game with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of third. Mike Waupoose struck out swinging, but reached on Peterson's wild pitch scoring Schwebke. Fosler, who finished 4-for-4 in the game with two RBI, then followed with an RBI single to left scoring Josh Shere. The Titans took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on Fosler's second run-scoring single of the game scoring Shere. The Eagles tied the game the following inning on Mike Schmidt's two-out single knocking in Steve Ems. Zurbriggen earned the win for UW-L, pitching 3.1, allowing three hits, one run and one walk with two strikeouts. Peterson started for the Eagles, going 6.2, allowing five hits, three runs and three walks while striking out two. He was also 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored. Bach and Schmidt both had two RBI. Adam Roos suffered the loss for UW-O, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, two runs and three walks with one strikeout. Curt Hendricks started for the Titans, going 0.2 of an inning, allowing three hits, two runs and one walk. He struck out one. Jim Ziegler pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out six.
