UW-Whitewater Wins Second Straight Baseball Championship

WIAC Championship TrophyMadison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater won the 2004 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) baseball championship with a 1-0 10-inning victory over UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, May 1 at Prucha Field in Whitewater, Wis.

The conference title is the second straight for the Warhawks and fourth in the last five seasons. The Warhawks have now won eight league baseball titles (2003, 2001, 2000, 1965, 1960, 1958, 1957).

UW-Whitewater's Aaron Guilbault's run-scoring single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Brady Endl to secure the conference crown for the Warhawks and earn the team's 15th consecutive victory. Endl reached base on a UW-Stevens Point error with two outs in the inning, advancing to second on the throwing mistake. Guilbault and Endl each had two hits in the contest.

UW-Whitewater stranded 11 runners on base and UW-Stevens Point turned three double plays.

UW-Oshkosh To Pursue Another Bid For NCAA III Baseball Championship

RELEASED: Thursday, April 1, 2004

APPLETON, Wis.--The host institutions and the local organizing committee announced Thursday that they would pursue another bid to host the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship, extending the stay of the event in the Fox Cities beyond 2005.

Department of Athletics officials from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Lawrence University, along with local championship committee President Rick Fantini, made the announcement at Fox Cities Stadium, site of the event.

The NCAA Division III Baseball Championship has been held at Fox Cities Stadium since 2000. UW-Oshkosh and Lawrence are co-hosts of the event, which will be played in Appleton for the fifth time from May 28-June 1. The championship also will take place at Fox Cities Stadium in 2005, when the current agreement to play the event here expires.

“We would like to make Appleton the Omaha of Division III,” said Fantini, referring to the permanent home of the Division I championship, Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.

UW-Oshkosh Director of Athletics Al Ackerman said the NCAA has not set its timetable for the bidding process, but he expected the deadlines would be put in place sometime this summer. Ackerman also remarked that the NCAA has not set a number of years for the next agreement.

Under the current agreement, Appleton will have the second-longest tenure of any championship site at six years. Marietta, Ohio, hosted the tournament for 12 consecutive years, from its inception in 1976 through 1987. None of the other three sites, Bristol, Conn., Battle Creek, Mich., or Salem, Va., has hosted the championship for more than five years.

The championship has enjoyed unprecedented support since coming to Fox Cities Stadium. The previous attendance record was broken in 2002 when 19,575 fans came to the five-day event. A pair of records were shattered in 2003. A crowd of 3,868, a single-game record for the championship, watched Chapman University’s 6-1 victory over UW-Oshkosh. The total attendance record was broken for the second consecutive season, as a total of 29,543 fans attended the event.

Local participation, both from volunteers and teams, has been a hallmark of the championship’s tenure in Appleton.
The Fox Cities, traditionally known as a strong baseball area, has rallied behind the championship. Volunteers have served as host families, local businesses have purchased blocks of tickets, and academic institutions have provided their facilities for practice.

Local teams also have brought the fans out in droves. UW-Oshkosh made its 17th appearance in the championship when it played at Fox Cities Stadium in 2003. Lakeland College made its first trip to Fox Cities Stadium when it played in 2002.

The defending champion is Chapman University of Orange, Calif. The Panthers won the title with a 15-7 victory over Christopher Newport University. It was the first NCAA Division III baseball title for Chapman.

Fox Cities Stadium is the home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, a Class A Midwest League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. The 5,500-seat stadium also has hosted the past six Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association State Tournaments, the 1997 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional, and the 1996 Midwest League All-Star Game.

Vito Named Head Baseball Coach At UW-Superior

RELEASED: Friday, August 15, 2003 (Written By: Dan Laughlin, UW-Superior Sports Info.)

Superior, Wis.--The University of Wisconsin-Superior has named Chris Vito as its head baseball coach. Vito replaces Jim Stukel after serving four years as his assistant.

A native of Eveleth, Minnesota, Vito will continue his duties as Sports Information Director and as an instructor in the Health and Human Performance Department at UW-Superior.

"I am honored and thrilled to accept this position," Vito said. "To be named a head coach at my age (30) in the WIAC is very humbling. I would like to thank the administration for this tremendous opportunity."

"We look forward to having Chris continue to build the UW-Superior Baseball tradition," said UW-Superior Athletic Director Jeff Kaminsky. "His enthusiasm and work ethic will be exciting for the program."

Vito obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from Moorhead State University in 1995 and earned his Master's Degree in Education with an Athletic Administration emphasis from North Dakota State University in 1999.

While attending NDSU, Vito served as a graduate assistant baseball coach with the Bison and worked as an administrative assistant in athletics. Vito has also served as an assistant baseball coach with the Hibbing, and Mountain Iron American Legion and VFW baseball programs, along with being an assistant baseball coach at Hibbing High School. Vito has also coached various levels of youth baseball in the Eveleth area, and was an assistant softball coach at Mesabi Community College.

"We are going to have a new attitude and a new approach," Vito said. "The WIAC is the strongest Division III athletic conference in the country. We are going to work harder than anyone in order to be successful. My philosophy is predicated on playing solid defense."

Vito will look to his returning veterans including shortstop Patrick Lind who was a First Team All-WIAC performer to lead his team, along with incoming freshmen who include Superior native Vince Viggiano.

"I think the pieces are in place for us to get this program turned around," Vito said. "We have a committed group of young men who are willing to do what it takes to be successful in the classroom and on the baseball diamond."

The Yellowjackets look forward to a renovated Ted Wheratt Field and bringing baseball back to the UW-Superior campus.

"This transformation is not going to happen over night," Vito said. "But I have absolutely no doubt that we can get this program competing with the elite in the WIAC."

Bloom Named UW-Stevens Point Head Baseball Coach

RELEASED: Tuesday, July 15, 2003

Stevens Point, Wis.--Pat Bloom, a former pitcher and assistant coach at UW-Stevens Point, has been named the school's head baseball coach.

Bloom, a 2001 graduate of UW-Stevens Point, takes over for Brian Nelson, who accepted the head coaching position at Rockford College. Bloom has a psychology degree from UW-Stevens Point and recently completed a Master's Degree in Sports Sciences at Miami University (Ohio).

A Tomah native, Bloom played two seasons at Carthage College before completing his final two seasons at UW-Stevens Point. A relief pitcher, he was a member of two conference championship teams at Carthage and one Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title team at UW-Stevens Point. Bloom also played on Carthage's 1997 Division III World Series team that defeated UW-Stevens Point in the second round.

Following his playing career, Bloom spent one season under Nelson as the Pointers' pitching coach as UW-Stevens Point won the WIAC tournament and advanced to the Division III tournament.

He spent the past year as a graduate assistant in the Miami athletic department, working closely with the CHAMPS/Life Skills program and teaching two classes designed for freshman student-athletes. Bloom was also in charge of community service and leadership programming for Miami athletics.

"I'm very excited to be back in Point and closer to family and friends," Bloom said. "To come home and take care of a program that has flourished recently is a great honor. I hope to carry on what Brian has done and instill a few new things to take the program to the top."

UW-Stevens Point has one of the nation's winningest Division III programs over the past seven years with a 212-82-1 record (.720 winning pct.), including three WIAC titles and five NCAA tournament appearances.

"Pat is out of the same mold as our previous two coaches," said UW-Stevens Point Athletic Director Frank O'Brien, noting that both Nelson and Scott Pritchard were former Pointer players and assistant coaches before taking the head coaching position. "He has tremendous enthusiasm and knows the effort it takes to continue the success we've had here in recent years."

"It's always been a dream of mine to have my own program," Bloom said. "I have a tremendous passion for coaching, baseball, and working with people."

Nelson leaves UW-Stevens Point ranked second on the school's all-time wins list with a 121-49-1 record in just four seasons.
