Curator's Statement
It is my pleasure to have been a part of the Brittingham Art Invitational. This exhibition offers a refreshing glimpse of the breadth of the creative work being produced by the artists/instructors throughout the University of Wisconsin System. This is especially evident given the wide range of media and the variety of stylistic approaches of the works included in the Invitational.
It seems particularly appropriate for these works to be exhibited in a university system setting. For the individual artist, creating art often involves an immersion in self that can be an isolating experience. This exhibition provides an important opportunity to view current work and establish a dialogue among artists and a broader community. For this reason, we are especially appreciative of the loan of these works from the participating artists.
Grateful acknowledgement is due to UW System President Katharine Lyall for making this exhibition possible. Special thanks goes to University Relations Vice President Linda Weimer, Special Assistant Laurie Dies, and Administrative Program Specialist Lorraine Cadwallader for all of their hard work in organizing this exhibition. A final acknowledgement goes to student intern Aliki Godi and the staff at UW-Madison University Publications for their help in the promotion of this project.
