Controlled Substance Disposal
For a listing of US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Controlled Substances, see http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/schedules/schedules.htm .
To dispose of a registered controlled substance, a DEA form 41 will need to be filled out. Your campus will have the option of disposal via Veolia or following a protocol to conduct an on-site sanitary sewer disposal. Custody considerations are important in this process. For campuses wanting to utilize sewer disposal, UW Milwaukee has a brief outline on their website at: http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/EHSRM/HAZEXCEPTIONS/controlled.html .
Legacy controlled substance disposal
Legacy controlled substances are substances that are listed on one of the US Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA) Controlled Substance Schedules, but are unregistered. This can result from any of a variety of circumstances, usually having to due with the substance being obtained prior to the promulgation of these regulations, and subsequently forgotten in old inventory. For more information on the disposal of legacy controlled substances, contact Ralph North .
