Melding Dance and Technology with Exciting Results: A Faculty Profile of Prof. Joan Karlen
Article by Jennifer Smith

For almost a decade, Professor Joan Karlen of the Theatre and Dance faculty at UW-Stevens Point has been intrigued by the rich possibilities of combining dance and technology. Read about how her technological experimentation began and her interactive CD-ROM. To learn more about her artistic development, the role of chance discovery in her work, and see stills of her dances, read her own commentary on her work (described below). (June 2000)

Technology and Dance bring New Avenues for Artistic Discovery
by Joan Karlen
Department of Theatre and Dance, UW-Stevens Point

Expanding on the faculty profile above, Prof. Karlen discusses her work from an aesthetic standpoint: why she began working with technology, and what choreographing for video -- and even with computerized "virtual" dancers -- has taught her about choreographing for the stage. While discussing specific technologies, Karlen brings to the fore the fluid, creative interaction she has found between dance and technology -- and the new avenues for creating meaning through movement it has afforded.
