I. Minutes from the November 9, 2006 teleconference meeting were approved.
II. Biological Abstracts platform decision. Susan Barribeau presented comments from some of the Madison librarians regarding a comparison of Biological Abstracts on the SilverPlatter interface or the ISI Interface. Each interface had different strengths and weakness. The ambivalence she found was reflected in other System librarian opinions. Currently ISI’s interface is not working with Refworks but this is balanced by the fact that SilverPlatter (now owned by Ovid) no longer seems to be updating its interface and is not accessibility compliant. The noncompliance and Ovid’s apparent disinterest in improving this interface proved to be key issues. A vote was taken to switch to the ISI interface as of July 1 2007 and it passed 11 to 3.
III. July renewals were discussed.
a. Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe - renew
b. OED - renew
c. PsycArticles - renew
d. Gale (Associations, Biography, Contemporary Authors) – the vote on this will be taken by email. The purchase is through a Madison CIC agreement and current pricing has not been received. Susan will check to see if pricing has been announced and if the package can be unbundled. There was also a question of simultaneous user limits that Susan will investigate.
e. Grove Dictionary of Music online - renew
After some discussion on each title, a vote was taken to renew and the majority vote ruled that all July titles for the shared electronic collection (except for Gale) would be renewed this year.
III. Richard Reeb gave a quick overview about the Best Practices Task Force work. The initial narrative they collected on ordering has proved to be difficult to translate. He tried to identify similar and divergent practices. Now that we have a primary vendor we can start the discussion of why we do what we do and establish a way of evaluating it to expose the best practices. There were many questions about EDI and a definite interest in sharing how EDI could work best for acquisitions processes. Many people felt they could benefit by some how to guidelines in this area. Acquisitions staff need to be brought together to more easily discuss these issues. Under the new Coordinating Committee system, it would be possible that a summer session similar to the one held on Ex Libris, would be planned.
An update from the Collection Development Task Force is asking for us all to expect a survey dealing with space and growth projects. We may be asked to get involved. Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay and Oshkosh will be testing the Ulrich Serials Analysis system to see if it is appropriate for us.
IV. CDC Working Group update – Chairs announced but other committee members have not been appointed yet.
Digital Initiatives Coordinating Committee - Josh Ranger - chair, Pat Wilkinson, CUWL rep.
Collections and Resource Sharing Initiatives Coordinating Committee - Richard Reeb, chair, Ewa Barczyk, CUWL rep.
Technical Services and Library Technology Initiatives Coordinating Committee - Steve Elfstrand (Changed to Marlys Brunsting in 6/07/07 announcement from CUWL chair) chair, Leanne Hansen, CUWL rep.
User Services Initiatives Coordinating Committee - Steve Frye, chair, Valerie Malzacher, CUWL rep.
There is a problem with the goal of a system wide mail list or alternative to meet the communication component of the working group report. It is possible a wiki may used to get the democratic ideal of the proposal.
V. Joan is working on a spreadsheet of the System wide databases and contacts. If Paul is not available when there are problems with a System purchased resource (as we had with CQ Researcher) we need to have some guidelines to fall back on. This is still in development.
VI. Sharon Knight was nominated and elected to be the new Secretary Chair Elect for the CDC 2007/2008. Karen Jander will become the chair July 1 for the 2007/2008 term. (Thank you Joan Robb, outgoing chair)
VII. ALS clarification – Madison is not going to change its ALS numbers. Paul will send out the ALS comparison with all the campus numbers on it.
VIII. Class Code update – Richard either heard back from each campus about eliminating the foreign class codes or he used your silence as a confirmation that you were fine with it. He asked if anyone needed the Music Scores class code or that if this should be eliminated also and folded under a monograph class code. There was no resounding call to save it.
IX. Book Procurement – Lori Voss gave a brief presentation on how the book procurement bid proceeded and her opinion on the process. YBP and Blackwell Books were the two finalists. Blackwell Books came back with the better cost proposal after a 2nd round of pricing. The rush order process is something Blackwell will have to work on. Lori emphasized the need for each campus to use Blackwell Books as their primary vendor unless there is a viable reason why not. The bid did anticipate that we would spend 2.5 million dollars with them. See chart. Standing orders of book series should also be moved to Blackwell Books. Madison and Milwaukee already have scheduled times for their approval profiles to be developed with Blackwell Books. Lori did reaffirm that if more than $25,000 is spent by a campus with one vendor a competitive bid process for selecting the vendor must be undertaken. This is a different interpretation than past practices for book purchasing.
X. Other – reviewed new ACS pricing announcement. Paul will need to contact Doug Storm at ACS to see what the implications are for our system purchase. Madison, Milwaukee and Oshkosh are interested in the possibility of negotiating a contract with Elsevier. This would probably be a multi-year license for accessing their ScienceDirect journals.
XI. Blackwell Books - Mike Arnold did a presentation about their intent to service and set up accounts across system.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:10
