I. Introductions
Richard convened the meeting at and began the meeting by introducing
the new Director of UW Stevens Point, Kathy Davis, who welcomed everyone to the
campus. This was followed by introductions
by all present and approval of the
II. Ebsco presentation
Richard introduced Ebsco reps Karen Hedge (Khedge@epnet.com) and Carola Yeakle (Cyeakle@epnet.com) who gave presentations on Business Source Premier and Cinahl Plus with Fulltext respectively.
Business Source Premier has substantially increased in content with 7000 more ft titles, deeper backfiles, new interface and non-journal content. It includes enhanced bibliographic records, author supplied abstracts, author email addresses, thesaurus terms, reindexing and abstracting journals, ranking journals, searchable cited references, 1541 peer reviewed journals, 3200 working papers, 8328 ft publications,
Native PDF. Non-journal content includes market research country data, 150 ft monographs, industry data. Cost is $115,000.
Cinahl Plus with Fulltext is one of four versions of Cinahl. It has the deepest backfiles with holding back to 1937. It includes 214 ft active titles not available in Proquest Nursing Journals. It includes Evidence based care sheets, Quick lessons, and CEU’s. Plans to expand to allied health area are ongoing. Cost is $53,000.
III. YBP Trial Report and Status
Richard reported that UW Madison Acquisitions has been tracking items that have already been ordered when it goes to order an item. To date:
403 have been owned elsewhere
Please note: Subsequent to the meeting Richard corrected the data to indicate
40% were not reordered and 60 % were ordered as added copies.

Dianne Witte noted that 36% wanted reorders of items that other campuses had
made
IV. Sage Publications
Lorie provided follow-up of the Sage trial, noting that there are 141 titles not part
Of the Sage collections that are held in the state. The surcharge on the collection is 32% of what we currently pay for paper. We would be cancelling all paper . Inflation rate cap of 7% could be negotiated.
Several campuses indicated that they have cancelled titles. The inflation rate on Sage titles is quite high. Ron Hardy questioned Sage’s reliability in negotiation.
The group agreed to let this go for now.
V. NetLibrary
Lorie noted that we have not discussed this in is some time. She reviewed that funding for this item had been moved to Automation several years ago. The amount of money spent on this product is determined by the consortium, based on FTE. It is all or nothing. Individual campuses can continue to be a part of the consortium if the group decides not to.
Lorie asked that we think about how the titles are being used? Do we want to continue? We have until next spring to decide. Lorie will look at contractual language to answer the questions: What happens to the content if we discontinue? Would there be an access fee?
VI. CUWL Working Group on Subgroups
Paul Moriarty and Mary Rieder have been appointed to a new standing committee of CUWL established at the May meeting. Its purpose is to review the structure of the various committees and groups and evaluate how they function and interact, determine their value, efficiency etc. The committee will be chaired by Bob Rose, and includes Valarie Malzacher and Jana Reeg Steidinger. They are just getting started and will probably be sending out a survey of some kind.
VII. 2005-6 Shared Collection
A. Question on Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy –why $14,500 when we agreed to $10,000? This is a national consortium and $14,500 was the resulting amount at the end of negotiations. We had agreed to join so this was the price paid. It ia a three
year commitment.
B. Cinahl Plus with Fulltext - discussed as a change for 05/06 at cost of $53,000. More fulltext and deeper backfiles and cost beneficial. One concern is loss of New England Journal of Medicine. There is a fairly low cost joint purchase of this title by several campuses as an alternative for others to pursue.
C. Business Source Premier – look at as an alternative to ABI Inform. The cost
differential is persuasive and compelling
according to
seriously. One concern is the loss of the Wall Street Journal. Some
campuses indicate that they will have to sell the switch to BSP and that it will
require a close title comparison .
This will be looked at and decided on for next year.
D. Individual resources under review followed by comments from discussions:
1.
2. ABI – Compare with BSP as noted above
3. ACS - $46,400 access
fee; $25,500 for archive; How much use will the archive really get ? Possibly
pursue as a
4. BioOne - Pricing change; pricing not yet available
5. Biological Abstracts –look at Web of Science interface trial
6. CQ Researcher – payment made for the archives
7. Emerald - pay for titles subscribed to at initiation of contract, can’t cancel; Concern about this and about discrepencies in publications(duplications); renewal not due until March.
8. GenderWatch-a lot of inactive titles, but only one of this type in collection
9. IOP- year 2 of 3 year contract; UWS picks up surcharge
10. Web of Science – no quotes for separate databases, access fee model changing
Costs of separate contracts equal costs of group
Mixed view of this product among campuses
11. Mental measurements yearbook – cheaper to buy in paper but easier to search online
12. Nature -OK
13. Project Muse - OK
14. Duke –Can be let go
15. NEJM - add this
16. EbscoCinahl with Fulltext – add this in place of previous Cinahl product and Proquest Nursing Journals; ask for JAMA quote
E. July renewals also should be considered:
1 Gale- will not give any price break for
2. Statistical Universe - this is a serious possibility for removal from the
collection. This would bring costs to $28,882 in 06/07. Campuses
should look at his resource seriously before spring for possible
cancellation.
F. Vote –
Item not approved for renewal was the Duke collection.
Items note yet voted on are BioOne because pricing is not yet available and Emerald
which is not due for renewal until March.
All other items on the list were approved. Joan moved that the January renewals
be approved. This was seconded by Jan Bogstad. Motion carried.
VIII. Other
A. Shared campus allocations- Lorie asked that in planning ahead, we will most likely be increasing campus allocations in lieu of any budget increases for the collection. These have been based on weighted credit hours. We will be looking at the need for $50,000 more.
B. Science Online Lorie asked about campus interest and will be looking a
price for the campuses now that most are interested.
B. Janet From Milwaukee asked about the procedures used by other
Campuses regarding the sale of withdrawn books in library book sales.
C. Joan commented on the trend she is seeing of students using alternative items from interlibrary Loan rather than bothering with the paper content
In the journal stacks. Other also noted high increase in ILL.
