Same-Sex Spouse Open Enrollment: October 15 – November 14, 2014

As of October 6, 2014, same-sex marriage is legal and recognized in Wisconsin. This includes a legal same-sex marriage that occurred in another state or country prior to October 6, 2014, as well as the same-sex marriage licenses issued in June 2014 in Wisconsin. See the Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage in Wisconsin FAQ for additional details.

As a result, employees who have a same-sex spouse as of October 15, 2014, have a 30-day window ending on November 14, 2014, to enroll their same-sex spouse and that spouse’s children in benefit plans. Click on the benefit program below to see your options. Please note that you do not have a Flexible Spending Account enrollment or change opportunity for your 2014 election.

NOTE:  This information only applies to employees who are newly covering their spouse on their benefit plans.  If you currently cover your same-sex spouse as a domestic partner on your benefit plans, see the Family Changes – Domestic Partnership to Marriage page for benefit enrollment options.

When you get married, you are eligible to add your spouse and any newly eligible children (e.g. step-children) to your current benefit plans. You may also be able to enroll in certain benefit plans that offer an open enrollment due to your marriage.

You must submit an application to add your spouse and newly eligible children to your benefits plans and/or enroll in a benefit plan for the first time within 30 days of your marriage.

Reminder: It’s important to notify your institution of any changes in your name, address, emergency contacts and marital status.
