Erica Laughlin, director of the UW-Madison Information Technology Academy, coaches a group of high school seniors writing college admissions essays during a biweekly meeting of the ITA program. About 75 students between the ages of 14 and 18 are enrolled in the outreach program. Low-income and minority students from the Madison Metropolitan School District spend alternate Saturdays together for up to four years, studying computer hardware and software and other science and technology topics. The ITA has parallel goals of providing greater science opportunities to students who are otherwise underserved and improving undergraduate diversity at UW-Madison.
