Summit IV to explore health care costs, regional economic development

MADISON—An in-depth examination of the rising health care cost crisis and suggested approaches to strengthening Wisconsin’s economy through a regional strategy are key topics to be explored at Wisconsin Economic Summit IV.

The summit will feature the results of months-long studies by statewide workgroups convened to research the topics. Representatives from business, labor, government and education served on the workgroups and will present their findings on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Midwest Airlines Center in Milwaukee.

“These thought-provoking sessions will present important information of great concern to the entire state of Wisconsin,” said University of Wisconsin System President Katharine C. Lyall, co-chair of Wisconsin Economic Summit IV.

The health care workgroup will present its analysis of the health care cost crisis and recommend some potential ways to address the escalating increases. The regional economic development workgroup will present new methods for promoting accelerated economic growth in Wisconsin through regional collaboration.

In addition, Wisconsin Economic Summit IV will include a progress report on the concept of developing and fostering economic clusters. The cluster concept focuses on promoting key segments of Wisconsin’s economy, such as the paper industry, printing, medical imaging and biotechnology.

The summit program on Tuesday will also feature a discussion on improving Wisconsin’s business climate. Panelists include Wisconsin’s legislative leaders, officials from Gov. Jim Doyle’s administration and business leaders from some of Wisconsin’s largest companies.

The summit’s keynote speeches will be delivered by Doyle and John Morgridge, chairman of the board of Cisco Systems.
