Pulitzer Prize winner, former Cabinet secretary
to speak at Wisconsin Economic Summit III

MADISON - Paul A. Gigot of The Wall Street Journal and William M. Daley, president of SBC Communications and a former presidential cabinet secretary, will serve as keynote speakers at Wisconsin Economic Summit III.

Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin System, Wisconsin Economic Summit III will be held Oct. 14-16 at the Midwest Express Center in Milwaukee. The summit's theme this year is "Taking Steps to Move Wisconsin Forward."

Gigot is a Pulitzer Prize-winning political commentator for The Wall Street Journal. His keynote speech is titled "The Political Economy After September 11th," and he will speak at approximately 9 a.m. on Oct. 15.

Daley, a former secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce under President Bill Clinton, will give the keynote address at the summit's business and legislative luncheon on Oct. 15. The title of the luncheon is "A New Public/Private Partnership."

"We are pleased that Mr. Gigot and Mr. Daley will provide important national perspectives on the economy at Wisconsin Economic Summit III," said Katharine C. Lyall, president of the UW System. "Their insights will prove valuable as Wisconsin seeks to continually advance itself in today's global economy."

Gigot, a native of Green Bay, became editor of The Wall Street Journal's editorial page in September 2001. For 14 years prior, he wrote the paper's weekly "Potomac Watch" column, was a member of the newspaper's editorial board, and in 2000 won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary.

He joined the newspaper as a Chicago-based reporter in 1980, and moved to Hong Kong as a reporter in 1982. He was named the first editorial page editor of The Asian Wall Street Journal in 1984, and he won an Overseas Press Club award for his reporting. He also worked for the Far Eastern Economic Review and the National Review in New York.

A graduate of Dartmouth College, Gigot became familiar to public television audiences through weekly appearances, beginning in 1994, as a political analyst for the "News Hour with Jim Lehrer."

Daley, a native of Chicago, in December 2001 became president of SBC Communications, one of the nation's largest telecommunications firms and the parent company of SBC/Ameritech Wisconsin.

He served as President Clinton's commerce secretary from 1997-2000. From June to December 2000, he was chairman of Vice President Al Gore's presidential campaign. As special counsel to President Clinton in 1993, Daley coordinated the campaign to pass the North American Free Trade Agreement. His brother is Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

Prior to his appointment as president of SBC, Daley served as vice chairman of Evercore Capital Partners L.P., a private equity investment firm. His previous non-government positions include partner at the law firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt, president and chief operating officer of Amalgamated Bank of Chicago, and a lawyer at the firm of Daley and George. He is a graduate of Loyola University and John Marshall Law School.
