When you work for the University of Wisconsin you are eligible for comprehensive health insurance benefits. All of our health plans offer comprehensive medical and prescription coverage. You have the option to enroll in a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or a Preferred Provider Plan (PPP). There are two types of PPP plans available - those with a regional network of doctors (WEA Trust and WPS Metro Choice) and one with a nationwide network (the Standard Plan). The monthly employee cost of the HMO and PPP plans with a regional network is the same. The Standard Plan is the most costly plan available.

  • The HMOs use a specific network of doctors, clinics, hospitals and other medical providers located in a specific geographic area and you are expected to receive services within the network. Services can only be received out-of-network in an emergency situation or upon referral. At least one HMO is available in every county in the state. All HMOs provide some level of dental benefits.

  • The Preferred Provider Plans, WEA Trust Northwest (available in northwestern WI), WEA Trust East (available in middle to eastern WI) and WPS Metro Choice (available in Milwaukee and surrounding areas), provide the same level of benefits as the HMOs if benefits are received in-network. Coverage is also available out-of-network at a higher out-of-pocket cost. These plans also include dental benefits.

  • The Standard Plan is also a Preferred Provider Plan but it is available in every county and has a nationwide provider network. Coverage is also available out-of-network at a higher out-of-pocket cost. There are no dental benefits under the Standard Plan.

You can use the Health Plans by County tool to see what health plans and providers are available in your county.
