UW System Position on Bills Introduced in the Legislature During the 2007-2008 Session

Pending Legislation

SB 291

Tuition Gift Certificate Program

Full Description

(Gottlieb/Vinehout): This legislation is introduced at the request of the UW System as trailer legislation to correct technical issues in administering the gift certificate program, passed as Act 77 of last year.

Under WI Act 77, a student may use a gift certificate to pay for tuition or study abroad program at any of the UW System institutions, and the gift certificate may be transferred to a parent, child, spouse, or sibling of the named individual.

As the UW System does not have the logistical capability to administer the program, this legislation allows for a third party vendor to issue checks that are payable directly to the university and therefore completely transferable. This legislation repeals the provision which directed money specifically to the tuition appropriation account because this is problematic in instances involving payment for study abroad programs.

SUPPORT: This legislation would correct logistical problems in the tuition gift certificate program..
