UW System Position on Bills Introduced in the Legislature During the 2005-2006 Session

Pending Legislation

AB 730

Allows UW Schools to Charter

Full Description

(Vukmir) Current law permits the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin–Parkside, the Milwaukee Area Technical College, and the city of Milwaukee to operate charter schools directly or to contract for the operation of charter schools. Only pupils who reside in the school district in which an independent charter school is located may attend the charter school.

This bill allows additional four–year UW institutions or two–year college campus within the University of Wisconsin System to operate up to five charter schools or to contract for the operation of a charter school with the approval of the Board of Regents.

UW System Position

Neutral: Legislation first enabling UW-Milwaukee and UW-Parkside to establish charter schools was contained in the 1997-99 budget bill by Governor Thompson. At that time neither institution requested authority to operate or contract for the operation of a charter school. This legislation enables UW institutions to operate a charter school, but none would be required to do so.
