UW System Position
SUPPORT: This bill is a huge step toward equity for GLBTQ people. It provides protections to both same sex and male/female couples for domestic partnerships, and all possible benefits available to married couples to those who pursue domestic partnerships (e.g., property division, relationship dissolution, inheritance rights). The bill provides specific language supporting insurance coverage for domestic partners. This insurance coverage for UW System employees and annuitants is inclusive of all couples, regardless of gender. The bill represents the type of equity that is supportive of LGBTQ people, as well as unmarried straight couples. It responds to the Board’s continued support of domestic partner benefits in order to achieve equity for all of our faculty and staff, as well as address the competitive disadvantage of the UW system in attracting and retaining a diverse faculty and staff with the benefits accruing to all student, faculty, and staff.
