UW System Position

SUPPORT: This proposal increases the UW System energy costs appropriation by $22.5 million for the current fiscal year.

DOA estimates on energy costs for UW System have not been sufficient for a number of years.

Fiscal Year Shortfall
FY 00 $1.1 million
FY 01 $11.2 million
FY 02 $3.1 million
FY 03 $8.3 million

The UW System has been participating in energy conservation projects, to help reduce future energy consumption.

The UW is paying less in energy per square foot now than thirty years ago. However, significant price increases and more buildings to be heated and cooled have resulted in on-going shortfalls in this account.

The bill will accurately cover current costs and the biennial budget should continue an appropriate level of funding to avoid future shortfalls.
