Biography
Elizabeth Burmaster was elected in 2001 as Wisconsin's 25th superintendent of public instruction. She was reelected in April 2005 to a second term. Prior to her election, she worked in education for 25 years as a public school teacher and principal. A third-generation teacher, Burmaster earned bachelor's and master's degrees from UW-Madison and is the recipient of honorary doctorates from Beloit College and Edgewood College. Both her administrative and teaching experience span elementary, middle school and high school levels. From 1992 until her election, she was principal at Madison West High School. Burmaster is president of the Council of Chief State School Officers and is past chair of the National Center for Learning and Citizenship. Burmaster also serves on the National Board of Advisors for Pre-K Now, a part of the Pew Charitable Trusts.
