Academic & Student Services
Mission
ACSS advises and provides leadership and service to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, President of the UW System, Board of Regents, and institutions in the System in formulating, interpreting, and implementing policies related to academic programs, teaching and learning, and student affairs.
ACSS provides leadership for the UW System by serving the Board of Regents and the institutions in four primary areas:
- Providing leadership and service by establishing and maintaining effective communication channels relating to academic policies, issues, and concerns; encouraging collaboration among its internal constituents (the institutions) and among its many external constituents; and serving as a liaison between UW System, other educational agencies and institutions, and state agencies;
- Academic program approval and review by working with the UW institutions on the development and approval of new academic degree programs and in reviewing existing programs to ensure high quality and avoid unnecessary program duplication;
- Support for and development of teaching and learning by working closely with the institutions to provide a variety of faculty and instructional academic staff development programs aimed at improving teaching and student learning, as well as developing, implementing and monitoring policies and guidelines on issues related to faculty roles, workload and evaluation; and
- Student affairs, by providing leadership and coordination for student support services, including informing students, prospective students, and others about educational opportunities and admission procedures, providing academic and career advising, facilitating transfer, serving students with disabilities, and supporting the work of the student affairs staffs on such student life issues as alcohol and drug abuse.
