One of the primary functions of ACSS is to work with the UW institutions on the development and approval of new academic degree programs and in the review of existing programs, to ensure high quality and avoid unnecessary program duplication.

ACSS also administers several grant programs that support the advancement of teaching and learning as well as more traditional kinds of faculty research and scholarship, particularly collaborative projects.

ACSS sponsors initiatives to enhance connections with other education providers and improve teaching and learning at all levels throughout Wisconsin. These programs include a wide variety of PK-16 activities and collaborations with the Wisconsin Technical College System, private colleges and the Department of Public Instruction.

Providing leadership and coordination for student support services is a core function of Academic and Student Services (ACSS). ACSS supports the work of the institutions in taking a holistic, developmental approach to serving students. This includes informing students, prospective students, and others about educational opportunities and admission procedures, providing academic and career advising, facilitating transfer, serving students with disabilities, and supporting the work of the student affairs staffs on such student life issues as alcohol and other drug abuse.

Working closely with the UW System institutions, Academic and Student Services (ACSS) provides a variety of faculty and instructional academic staff development programs. These programs are aimed at improving teaching and student learning, promoting excellence, collaboration and innovation in teaching and learning activities, and the sharing of best practices. The Office of Professional and Instructional Development serves as a statewide faculty development resource for University of Wisconsin System institutions.

The University of Wisconsin System Women's Studies Consortium serves as the formal organization of the fourteen campus-based Women's Studies programs and UW Extension. It works to ensure the continued development of Women's Studies in the UW System.
