Agenda

SAVE-THE-DATE!

The University of Wisconsin System Office of Safety and Loss Prevention and the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will host a Risk Management Strategy for Study Abroad and Student Exchange workshop on March 2-3, 2009 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Attendees will depart this workshop with a better understanding of risk assessment, strategies for managing risk and reducing exposure to liability, strategies for managing financial risk and a draft risk management approach which is campus-specific.

Our current speakers list includes Sheri Ackley and Dave Pulda from the UW-System Office of Safety and Loss Prevention, a representative from UW System Legal, Laura Simmons from the Overseas Security Advisory Council, Ted Coley from the Bureau of Counselor Affairs (or another staff member from the same office), Margot Popowycz from Cultural Insurance Services International and representatives from A.J. Gallagher.  Additional speakers will be added.

Participation is open to teams from UW System institutions.  Participants should plan on arriving the morning of Monday, March 2.  The workshop will continue through Tuesday, March 3, ending mid-afternoon.

Get ready to participate!

1. Assemble a workshop team from your institution and share the workshop dates.

2. Gather forms, policies, procedures and emergency response/crisis management plans related to risk management to bring to the workshop.  You’ll use these as a starting point for development of a comprehensive Risk Management approach and/or incorporate them into your approach.

3. Attend the upcoming risk management workshop as a team, where you will.

  a. Learn about multiple aspects of risk management related to study abroad.

  b. Develop a framework for campus-specific risk assessment, reduction, avoidance and transfer practices.

  c. Identify campus-specific risk exposures that require immediate and near-term attention.

  d. Consider these exposures in the context of your institution’s willingness and ability to withstand potential losses resulting from these exposures.

  e. Formulate a draft risk management approach suited to your educational institution.

Workshop Teams

As you assemble your team, please consider the following:

1. Each campus will develop its own framework for campus-specific risk-management, which may or may not include a risk-management team; therefore, workshop teams won’t necessarily become study abroad risk-management teams after the workshop.

2. Teams must include directors of study abroad offices.

3. Each campus’ workshop team will be different.  The composition of your team will depend on which positions at your institution have (or should have) responsibilities related to study abroad and risk management.  Your team may include one or more of the following positions:

  • Associate/Assistant Vice Chancellor/s
  • Chief Business Officer
  • Counseling Center Director
  • Dean of Students (or designee)
  • Dean/s
  • Provost
  • Risk Manager/s
  • Student Health Center staff (NEW ADDITION)
  • University Police Chief
  • University Relations Director
  • Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
4. You may want to begin with a small workshop team of 2-3 people and use information from the workshop later to determine who should be included in risk management discussions and decisions on your campus. Or, you may want to involve a lot of people at the workshop and later determine what type of role each attendee should have on your campus.

5. You may invite study abroad program faculty directors/leaders, faculty/staff directly involved in offering sports programs which travel internationally, student club officers if clubs are traveling internationally and students entering the field of international education.  However, this is not a training program on how to, for example, manage a crisis abroad.  This workshop is intended to inform the development of a Risk Management approach suited to your educational institution.
