Dear Chas:

Please accept my thanks for your willingness to chair the Instructional Academic Staff (IAS) working group. Academic staff are an important and integral part of the UW System and its institutions. Your leadership will help ensure that IAS will continue to make significant contributions to the success and vitality of the UW System, while they work in environments that are professionally rewarding.

The specific charge of the IAS working group is to investigate and recommend titling options for non-tenure track instructional and research staff, and to propose System-wide initiatives to facilitate the integration of non-tenure instructional and research staff into institutional life. The foundation for the group's efforts will be the Board of Regents 21st Century Study: Teaching Academic Staff in the UW System (executive summary enclosed). In addition, I encourage you to build upon the work that the UW System Office of Academic Affairs has completed to date. A summary of these activities and initiatives is available on-line at: http://www.uwsa.edu/acadaff/ias/.

The working group will be comprised of representatives from each of the UW Institutions to include members of the academic staff, faculty, institutional administration, and UW System staff. A smaller steering committee has been established that will meet during the summer to identify working group members and to prepare for the subsequent meetings. The steering committee includes Professor Cathy Hegelund, UW-Manitowoc; Breck Speers (IAS), UW-Oshkosh; Larry Rubin, Assistant Vice President, UW System; Fran Garb, UW System; and Steve Bialek, UW System. The larger working group will meet during the fall and deliver a summary report to me in December 2000.

On behalf of everyone at UW System Administration, I extend my appreciation for your involvement. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Larry Rubin (608-265-5365, lrubin@uwsa.edu) if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Provosts' meeting.

Sincerely yours,

Gary Thibodeau
Interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
