Academic and Student Services (ACSS) will convene a working group to investigate and recommend titling options for non-tenure track instructional and research staff, and to propose System-wide initiatives to facilitate the integration of non-tenure instructional and research staff into institutional life.

The group will be comprised of representatives from each of the UW Institutions to include members of the academic staff, faculty, institutional administration, and UW System staff. A smaller steering committee drawn from the working group will meet during the summer to prepare for the full working group. The working group will meet during the fall and deliver a summary report in January 2001. The objectives and strategies for the working group include:

Objective 1: The working group will recommend suitable revisions to the UW System IAS and RAS titling options to reflect national titling norms and trends.

Strategies:

a. Research national trends in titling for non-tenure track instructional and research staff.

b. Propose revisions to the UW System IAS and RAS titling options that better reflect national norms and trends.

c. Investigate titles that better reflect the work IAS and RAS are doing.

d. Monitor titling change initiatives at UW-Madison and explore how efforts might serve as a model for other institutions.

Objective 2: The working group will recommend efforts and initiatives to facilitate the integration of IAS into institutional life.

Strategies:

a. Survey academic personnel officers to identify changes in policy or practice occurring subsequent to the System-wide focus group meeting (March 24, 2000)

b. Assess the degree to which recommendations for institutions made in the "Teaching Academic Staff Study" have been implemented.

c. Identify recommendations that have been problematic for institutions to implement.

d. Suggest System-wide initiatives to facilitate implementation of the study's recommendations.

e. Propose revisions to recommendations put forth in the "Teaching Academic Staff in the UW System Study" and/or develop new guidelines or guiding principles.
