2009 AODA Symposium
In the Know: Trends in AODA Education & Prevention

Since the first AODA Symposium in 1998, this biennial conference has addressed prevention of alcohol abuse by university students. This year's Symposium, as in previous years, is both content rich and highly interactive, and will be especially focused on the evaluation of AODA policy and current AODA prevention best practices. The conference is designed for teams composed of 5-7 people from UW System institutions, Wisconsin Technical College System institutions, or Wisconsin private colleges. The 2009 Symposium will have concurrent sessions covering a wide range of topics, a panel of your colleagues talking about best practices in behavioral intervention teams, an update on the AODA survey results, and the following high powered speakers:
Dr. Katie Bogle – Keynote Address on Alcohol and the Culture of ‘Hooking Up’
Kathleen A. Bogle, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at La Salle University in Philadelphia. She received her master's degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Joseph's University in 1998 and her doctoral degree in Sociology from the University of Delaware in 2004. Her major areas of research interest include gender, sexual behavior and intimate relationships. Her top-selling book, Hooking Up: Sex, Dating, and Relationships on Campus, was released by New York University Press in February 2008. The book release has engendered interviews and articles in, among others, Cosmopolitan, Newsweek, and the Wall Street Journal. In addition, she has been an invited guest on various National Public Radio programs in Philadelphia and New York City and television news programs (CBS and FOX). She has also served as an invited keynote speaker at many universities nationwide. Dr. Bogle is also heavily involved in other research on the subject of hooking up and dating. In November 2007, she published a paper on this topic in Sociology Compass. Dr. Bogle is also interested in the study of crime, particularly violence against women. She has co-authored a paper on this topic ("Exploring the Connection between Pornography and Sexual Violence"), which appeared in Violence & Victims.
Dr. David Rakel - Endnote Address on Healing the Healers - Caring for Ourselves
Dr. Rakel started his career near the Teton Mountains in Driggs, Idaho where he was in rural private practice for five years before completing a two-year residential fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. He is the founder and director of the University of Wisconsin Integrative Medicine Program and asst. professor in the department on family medicine at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Rakel is editor of one of the premier texts in this field titled, Integrative Medicine now in its second edition. He is involved in NIH funding to study the placebo effect and to incorporate healing modalities into medical school curricula. He is board certified in family and holistic medicine and sits on the board of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine and is on the executive committee for the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine. He has a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine and is certified in interactive guided imagery.
Dr. Debra Murray - Concurrent Session presenter on Motivational Interviewing
Debra A. Murray, Psy.D., CASC, CPP, CCS-Intermediate, MINT member Debra Murray earned a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. Her Doctoral research was on Motivational Interviewing: Efficacy in Substance Abuse Training and Implications for Therapist Training and Supervision. She also holds several certifications and credentials in alcohol and other drug abuse counseling and prevention. She serves as a trainer of trainers for Motivational Interviewing and Negotiation Training (MINT). Dr. Murray is currently an Associate Professor of Psychology at Viterbo University and serves as the coordinator for their Alcohol & Drug Counseling Certification Program. She also has a limited practice as a Clinical Therapist for Franciscan Skemp Healthcare/Mayo Health System.
